Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
46 - 34 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Boris Kharitonov! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
16 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Love-Hate Powell! The judges for this bout are Seu Braga, Alexandre Firmino and Emerson Jorge.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Powell fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Kharitonov on the side of the head. Kharitonov throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Powell lands with a thumping leg kick.
Powell lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Love-Hate Powell seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Kharitonov takes one on the button. Powell cracks the inside of Kharitonov's front leg. Kharitonov misses with a head kick.
Powell jabs at Kharitonov's body. Kharitonov checks a low kick from Powell. Kharitonov looked to counter with a high kick but didn't commit. Powell throws a poor cross that misses
and Kharitonov counters with a quick right hand to the jaw. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Powell uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Kharitonov has time to react. Kharitonov avoids the body shot from Powell.
Kharitonov swung with a counter punch to the body but it didn't connect. Powell looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. Powell wants to pass the guard but Kharitonov is defending well.
That's one minute gone in the round. Powell sitting and controlling from the half guard. Powell is looking to pass Kharitonov's guard but actually Kharitonov recovers to full guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Powell throws an elbow that misses. Kharitonov uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Powell's guard. Nice move by Kharitonov!
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Powell working for a triangle but Kharitonov defends it easily.
Kharitonov wants to control from the top but Powell keeps moving. Kharitonov tries to free his leg and advance position but Powell is retaining full guard. Kharitonov is working hard here to advance position. Kharitonov trying to stand up but can't free himself from Powell's guard. Powell is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Powell might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Kharitonov haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Powell is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Powell looking for a sweep. Not yet Powell, not yet. Kharitonov would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard. Kharitonov gets to his feet - Powell follows without any prompting. Kharitonov throws a head kick that misses. Powell throws out a powerful jab. A head kick misses from Kharitonov. Powell tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Kharitonov walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush. Kharitonov tries to check a leg kick but that clearly hurt him. A slapping leg kick lands for Powell.
Kharitonov has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Powell. Kharitonov misses with a combination
and Powell counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. Kharitonov gets a clinch. Kharitonov misses with a shot to the kidneys.
Powell lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Powell trying to land knees to the body.
Powell's coach down at Palace of Pain Gym - VCL - Rio was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Powell's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight. Powell blocking some punches.
Powell misses with a shot to the kidneys.
Kharitonov letting Powell take a breather here. Powell lands on the inside with an uppercut. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Love-Hate Powell dominated that round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Powell feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Kharitonov's calf. Powell lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh. Powell instigates a clinch. Kharitonov tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage. Kharitonov misses with a hook to the ribs.
Kharitonov throws a head punch that misses. Powell lands with a light punch inside. Powell putting his Muay Thai to good use. He has Kharitonov in a tight clinch and is doing some damage with knees to the body. Powell lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Kharitonov backwards. Powell lands a shoulder strike. Powell is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace. Powell lands a body punch - he's looking to wear down Kharitonov. The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Powell lands a body shot in the clinch.
Powell has Kharitonov pressed against the cage.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kharitonov on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Powell effectively controlling the action here. Powell lands a left hand.
Kharitonov is pressed against the cage. Powell pushes back and unleashes a big elbow that really hurts Kharitonov! Two more big strikes from Powell and Kharitonov crumples to the mat and taps out furiously due to the strikes!
