43 - 39 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Bryan Bishop! The judges for this bout are Felipe Paraventi, Matheus Silva and Daniel Cesar.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Bates changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Bishop looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Bates is looking to take a break and control but Bishop is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Bishop struggling a bit here. Bishop sneaks back into half guard. The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Bates connects with a nice short shot to Bishop's temple. Bates is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Bishop defends it well. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Bishop is defending against the submission attempts here by Bates.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Bates is trying to control. Bishop wants to improve his position but can't escape this time. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's one minute gone in the round. Bates thows a huge punch but Bishop dodges it nicely.

Bates is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position. Bates wants to work for an arm triangle but Bishop is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

That's two minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Bates is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Bates is working for a kimura but Bishop is defending it quite comfortably.

That's three minutes gone in the round. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Bishop missing with punches from the bottom.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup. Bates is working for a kimura but Bishop is defending it quite comfortably.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Bates shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Bishop sprawls well. Bishop wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Bates gets slowly back to his feet. Bates looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. Bishop kicks off Bates and gets to his feet.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Bates tries for a takedown but Bishop sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Bates closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Bates lands in his opponent's guard. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Bishop is on top in guard.
Bishop keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Bates's head. Bates looking for a sweep. Not yet Bates, not yet. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Bishop scores with a decent looking elbow strike. Bishop landing with the ground and pound. Bates throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Oh Bates is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!! Bishop perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Bates with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Bates is looking for a sweep. Bishop is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Bates is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Bishop scores with a couple of nice shots. Bates wants to improve his position but Bishop is controlling well.

That's one minute gone in the round. Bates is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Bishop pulls his head out easily. Bishop has been the more effective fighter overall so far. Bates is looking to improve his position.
Bates is in a tricky position but he's been working on his transitions down at Soul Supremacy Rio, so we'll see if he gets out of it. Bishop is trying to control. Bates wants to improve his position but can't escape this time. Bishop seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. Bishop prevents Bates from improving his position. Bates trying to control here.
Bates is trying to get back to full guard. Bishop slips a nice elbow through Bates's hands, connecting with Bates's forehead. Bishop controlling the pace. Bates throws a strike from the bottom that misses.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Bates is trying to get back to full guard. Bates really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Bishop lands strikes from half guard. Bates tries to get to full guard but Bishop has control of the leg. Bates wants to sweep but Bishop has passed to side control! Bates tries to bench press Bishop off him but Bishop keeps the position. Bates being controlled for a moment. Bates is looking for a sweep. Bates taking punishment in the form of punches.
Bates gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard. Bishop scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Bishop lands a massive shot from half guard that has rocked Bates! More strikes land and this one is all over! Bishop jumps to his feet and is applauded loudly by the crowd!
