Coming up we have a featherweight Tycoon World Grappling Championship rules bout between Eli Armis and Pelle Paniikki. Armis's entrance music is Mortal Kombat Theme. A fine choice. The crowd seem to be enjoying Paniikki's choice of entrance music: N'sync - Bye Bye Bye. Pelle Paniikki told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!
This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the featherweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Los Angeles, with a TWGC record of 3 wins and 3 losses; Eli Armis! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Helsinki, with a TWGC record of 3 wins and 2 losses; Pelle Paniikki! The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Wesley Smith and Robert Twigg.
Let's get this grappling contest under way! Who will be victorious? Paniikki fails to land the takedown. Armis closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Armis (2) vs (0) Paniikki Armis tries to pass the half guard into mount. Paniikki knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Paniikki wants to get back to full guard. Paniikki actively working from the bottom here. Paniikki regains full guard. Nicely done. Armis controls from within his opponent's guard. Paniikki looking to sweep here. No luck so far. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Armis tries to free his leg and advance position but Paniikki is retaining full guard. Paniikki had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Armis defends it easily. Armis preventing the sweep.
That's one minute gone in the round. Armis wants to control from the top but Paniikki keeps moving. Armis got a little sloppy there for a moment and Paniikki has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Armis has managed to get both his arms back between Paniikki's legs - danger averted. Armis sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Paniikki's guard. Armis is trying to control the action in half guard but Paniikki is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. The fighters are battling for position here. Paniikki manages to regain full guard. Nice work. Armis is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Paniikki has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Armis can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Armis is looking to advance position but Paniikki has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount! That's two minutes gone in the round. Armis tries to hold on but Paniikki postures up. Armis is trying desperately to improve position. Paniikki swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Armis is now in Paniikki's guard. A big mistake from Paniikki there, giving up the dominant position! Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Armis (4) vs (4) Paniikki Armis stands and throws Paniikki's legs to the side, diving into side control. Score +3 for passing guard: Armis (7) vs (4) Paniikki Paniikki tries to improve position but can't. Armis works to advance to full mount. Paniikki defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs. Score +2 for reaching mount: Armis (9) vs (4) Paniikki Paniikki wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Armis (12) vs (6) Paniikki Armis wants to sweep but no luck. Paniikki has gone for a leg lock! Armis slips out almost immediately though and dives into Paniikki's guard. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Armis (14) vs (6) Paniikki Armis trying to control the position from guard on top but Paniikki is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Paniikki has his foot on Armis's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Armis works his way back into a safe position though. Armis works a leg free and moves into half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Armis trying to mount his opponent but Paniikki defends it. Armis has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount. Score +3 for passing guard: Armis (17) vs (6) Paniikki
That's four minutes gone in the round. Paniikki is looking to improve his position but Armis isn't that keen on the idea. Armis looking to control but Paniikki is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Paniikki can't escape the position.
Paniikki is controlling an arm, preventing Armis from taking his back. Although keeping him in mount is no better to be honest.
That's five minutes gone in the round. Armis tries to control but Paniikki wriggling away. Armis moves to the back position. Score +3 for taking back: Armis (20) vs (6) Paniikki Armis looking for the RNC. Paniikki felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it. Armis is trying to stick to Paniikki's back but Paniikki is turning into Armis. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Armis's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Paniikki. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Armis (20) vs (8) Paniikki Paniikki trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Paniikki trying to move into half guard but instead Armis has managed to sweep! Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Armis (22) vs (8) Paniikki Paniikki looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Armis has picked Paniikki up and slammed him! Paniikki can't keep hold of the triangle and Armis manages to pass to side control! Score +3 for passing guard: Armis (25) vs (8) Paniikki Armis wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Paniikki, who protects the arm well. Armis is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Paniikki has escaped the position, nice work there.
That's six minutes gone in the round. Paniikki is looking for a sweep. Paniikki wants to improve his position, back to half guard but Armis has ideas of his own. He's got hold of Paniikki's far side arm and it looks like he's got an Americana. Ohh! Ohhhh! OOOOOOOOOH! A human being's arm is not meant to bend like that! Paniikki is tapping like a morse code operator on the Titanic! SOS SOS! He's out of here! Great win for Armis!
