PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jake Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Richard Burgess (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Smith comes to the cage accompanied by Psycho. Smith has a slight injury, which hopefully won't affect the fight too much. Jake Smith has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jake Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Richard Burgess!
The judges for this bout are Ben Watson, Donatello Bradman and John Mangel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Burgess tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Burgess shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Smith eats them both and turns towards Burgess to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.


It looks like Jake Smith has been cut.
Burgess lands a head shot.
Burgess has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.
Burgess throws a quick inside leg kick.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Burgess wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Burgess jumps guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Burgess is trying to control the position but Smith postures up.

Smith drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Burgess dives on top into guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Burgess stands up and waves to Smith to follow him.
Nice takedown defense from Smith. No joy for Burgess on that attempt.
Smith shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Burgess counters with a straight right hand.

Burgess closes the distance and clinches up with Smith, looking for a takedown. Burgess pushes Smith against the cage but Smith circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Burgess dives in for a single leg takedown but Smith sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Jake Smith has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Richard Burgess.
Smith shoots in for a takedown but Burgess shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Burgess lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Smith backs up against the cage.
Smith really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Burgess dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Burgess turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.

Burgess closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Smith bucks up and tries to throw Burgess off but instead Burgess has got his back!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Burgess is not going to allow Smith to sit and survive in this position.

Burgess is trying to stick to Smith's back but Smith is turning into Burgess. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Burgess's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Smith.
Burgess looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Smith looking to sit in guard and control but Burgess gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Smith pulls Burgess in close to prevent any damage.
Burgess wants to control from the top but Smith keeps moving.
Burgess stops Smith from standing up.

Smith has his foot on Burgess's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Burgess works his way back into a safe position though.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Smith has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Smith there as he acknowledges the shot.
Burgess shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Smith sprawls well. Smith wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Burgess gets slowly back to his feet.

Smith appears to be looking for a counter punch to the body.
Burgess fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Smith avoids it really well and circles away.

Smith throws a sloppy head kick and Burgess moves out of range easily.

and Burgess counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Burgess wants to clinch up but Smith keeps it at a distance.
Burgess tries to score a power double leg takedown but Smith sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Burgess somewhat.

Burgess shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Smith as he jumps to the side.

Burgess has closed the distance and engaged Smith in a clinch.
Smith jumps guard but Burgess turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Smith is struggling to control the position.
Smith is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.

Smith breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Smith defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Burgess.

enabling Burgess to counter with a crisp jab.
Burgess will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Smith fires out a quick counter leg kick but Burgess just manages to avoid it.

and Burgess counters with a series of strikes. Smith will be more careful next time no doubt.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Burgess moves into range and connects with a jab.

Smith has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.

Smith changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Burgess looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Smith will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Smith wants to control but Burgess is keeping him busy.

Richard Burgess showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

and Burgess counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Smith takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Burgess misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Jake Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

and Burgess counters with a three punch combo that has Smith backing up. Smith nods at Burgess to acknowledge the strikes.
Burgess goes for a double leg but Smith avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Smith continues to drive forward.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Burgess.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

and Burgess counters with a left to the body.
Burgess fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Smith looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.

Smith shoots in for a takedown but Burgess shows good takedown defense.
Smith tries to work over Burgess's front leg with a kick but Burgess checks it.
Smith throws a nice looking combination but Burgess bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Burgess is looking to slow Smith down with leg kicks.
Richard Burgess seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Burgess shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Smith as he avoids it easily.

Burgess gets caught flat footed, as Smith shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Burgess has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Smith controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Burgess wants to sweep here but Smith controlling him for the moment.

Smith gets to his feet. Burgess looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Burgess dives in and grabs Smith's left leg, looking for a takedown. Smith pushes down on Burgess's head and hops out.
Jake Smith has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Well Burgess has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
