Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
28 - 16 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Johan Axelsson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
12 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Gianpaolo Volpicelli! The judges for this bout are Elvis Blanc, Trevor Gratis and Yves DeLean.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Axelsson misses with a few strikes there.
Volpicelli tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Volpicelli throws a low kick but Axelsson moves out of range easily. Volpicelli moves out of range of the strikes. Volpicelli tests Axelsson's chin there with a solid looking shot.
It looks like Johan Axelsson has been cut. Axelsson throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Volpicelli sees it coming and avoids it easily. Volpicelli is looking for the big counter here. Volpicelli on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Axelsson throws a lazy right hand but Volpicelli sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily. Axelsson walks into a left hand. Volpicelli swings for the body but Axelsson moves out of range.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Volpicelli throws a head kick that looked like it stung.
Volpicelli shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down. Volpicelli tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Axelsson was well out of range. Poor timing from Volpicelli. Axelsson is looking to counter punch. Axelsson moves away from the strike by Volpicelli. Axelsson throwing a counter right hand but Volpicelli manages to avoid it. This has been an exciting period of action! Volpicelli throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
That's one minute gone in the round. Axelsson is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Volpicelli. Volpicelli shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Volpicelli showed some decent athleticism there. Volpicelli is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Axelsson defends it well. Axelsson works his way to full guard. Good work. Volpicelli content to stall in guard here. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Axelsson controls Volpicelli momentarily but Volpicelli frees himself. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Axelsson holds on and takes a little breather.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Axelsson keeping moving, preventing Volpicelli from controlling successfully. Axelsson is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Volpicelli stands over his opponent and dives in with a flying punch! Axelsson throws up his legs and catches Volpicelli in a triangle! Oh this looks tight! Volpicelli tries to escape but he's forced to tap! Wow, fantastic work there by Axelsson! That came out of nowhere!
