PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Lolo Parra (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul Kong (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kong has chosen Evil Scotsman as his entrance music. Paul Kong told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Lolo Parra!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Paul Kong!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kong scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Kong trying to control the action but Parra is working from the bottom.
Parra is trying to stand up here but Kong is controlling him well.

Kong is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Parra sees it coming and defends easily.
Kong slows the pace down in half guard.
Kong sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Parra defending well though.

Kong seems to be looking for submissions.
Parra tries to kick Kong off but Kong keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Parra shoots and misses

and Kong counters with a nice double leg into side control. Parra won't be happy with that.
Parra is not content to let Kong control the position.
Kong prevents Parra from escaping the position.
Parra is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Kong stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Parra stuffs the takedown.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Parra throws a right hand that Kong ducks under and follows up with a left that Kong also avoids with ease.
Parra looks to land a combination but Kong avoids it well.
Kong looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Parra doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Kong counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Parra's guard now.
Parra is breathing heavily.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Kong stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Parra swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Kong prevents Parra from getting back to his feet.
Kong is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Kong trying to control the position from guard on top but Parra is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Kong forces his way into half guard.

Kong decides to stand and escape the position.
Parra buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Kong does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Parra misses with a takedown

and Kong counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Parra's guard now.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Lolo Parra. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Kong tries to free his leg and advance position but Parra is retaining full guard.
Kong throwing strikes but missing.

Parra is looking for a triangle but Kong pushes his legs off easily.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Kong accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Kong passes Parra's left leg - he's now in half guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Well, if Kong is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Parra gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Kong counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Parra thinking.
Parra misses with a leg kick
and Kong counters with a slapping leg kick.
Lolo Parra seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Parra closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Kong to the mat! Kong manages to get full guard.
Kong is adopting a defensive guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Kong looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Parra passes into half guard.
It looks like Parra is going to stand back up.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Parra trying to control the action but Kong is working from the bottom.
Kong regains full guard. Nicely done.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kong avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Kong is trying to control the position but Parra postures up.
Kong bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Parra's guard.
Kong works a leg free and moves into half guard.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Kong lands a nice short elbow.
Parra is looking to improve his position.

Parra is staying active underneath Kong, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Kong looks to land a strike but Parra avoids it nicely and regains full guard.
Kong trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Parra preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Parra keeping moving, preventing Kong from controlling successfully.
Paul Kong has got the better of the ground game so far.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Parra manages to escape and get back to his feet.

and Kong counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Lolo Parra. That's going to take a lot out of him.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Kong wants to control from the top but Parra keeps moving.
Kong might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Parra kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Paul Kong will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!

Kong controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Kong stands up over Parra, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Parra avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Parra trying to keep a closed guard but Kong is proving a slippery customer.
Parra throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

Kong gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Parra throws a solid leg kick but Kong takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Parra.
Parra misses with a takedown

and Kong counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Parra!
The referee warns Parra that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Parra takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

Kong gets to his feet and calls his opponent to stand. Here come the fireworks!
Kong fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Parra has his takedown stuffed

and Kong decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Parra's guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Lolo Parra. That's going to take a lot out of him.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Kong passes into half guard.
Kong has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Kong is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Parra has managed to free his arm - good work.

Parra looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Lolo Parra has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Kong has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Parra is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Kong yanks on the arm and Parra is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Kong.
