The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Johnston slips a straight right by Matthews. Johnston tries to clinch but Matthews moves out of range. Johnston is looking to clinch but Matthews is avoiding it.
Johnston walks forward, straight into a front kick from Matthews. Johnston should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete. Matthews tests Johnston's chin there with a solid looking shot. Johnston wants to clinch up but Matthews keeps it at a distance. Matthews closes the distance and clinches up with Johnston, looking for a takedown. Matthews pushes Johnston against the cage but Johnston circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Johnston moves in looking to clinch but Matthews pushes him off. The fight stays on the outside here - Johnston looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Matthews decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Matthews throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Matthews seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Matthews tries to pass to full mount but Johnston defends it. Matthews is tying to control. Johnston wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
That's one minute gone in the round. Matthews is working for a kimura from half guard. He's really concentrating on the hold and it's allowed Johnston to slip a leg under and get back to full guard. Matthews pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Johnston is keeping the position for now. Johnston preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Matthews trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Johnston manages to land a sweep and now he's on top! Matthews tries to strike from the bottom.
Johnston really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Matthews. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Matthews looking for a sweep. Not yet Matthews, not yet. Matthews will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Johnston wants to stand up, so he's looking to wriggle free of Matthews's closed guard. He's half up but Matthews has locked on to an arm! Uh oh! Matthews pivots and extends the arm, Johnston falls face first to the mat and taps??... does he?? YES! He's tapping! Excellent counter grappling there by Matthews! Well done that man!
