Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Matt Hughes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tarik Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Matt Hughes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 21 - 16 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, Tarik Johnson!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Don Winkell and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Johnson lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Hughes goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.
Johnson connects with a good right hand that stumbles Hughes. Hughes circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Johnson catches Hughes with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
Johnson is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Hughes has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Johnson finds it's way round the side to connect with Hughes's head.
Johnson shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Hughes as he avoids it easily.
Johnson lands a jab to the head.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Hughes blocks a jab.
Johnson uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Hughes.
Johnson drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Hughes defends it well.
Johnson lands with a straight right. Hughes didn't see that one coming.
Tarik Johnson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Hughes steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Johnson.
Hughes moves out of range of the strikes.

Hughes lands a left and a right that send Johnson crashing to the mat, dazed. Hughes thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!
We've been informed that Johnson has been sparring a lot of Muay Thai in the buildup to this fight so let's see if that has an impact on the result.
A jab from Hughes does it's job there.


Johnson is rocked!
Hughes comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Johnson has his takedown stuffed
and Hughes counters with a nice uppercut.
Johnson is still on wobbly legs! Can Hughes finish him?

That's one minute gone in the round.
Johnson sizes up Hughes with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.


Hughes is rocked!
Johnson seems to have recovered his senses.
Johnson scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Hughes doesn't seem bothered though.
Oh Hughes is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Hughes is breathing heavily.
Johnson ducks down into range and throws a picture perfect right hook that connects with Hughes's jaw. Hughes's eyes stare off into space as he falls to the mat, out cold! Johnson does the decent thing and steps back, rather than landing any shots to his unconscious opponent.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:16 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Tarik Johnson!
