PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Hong Giles (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lucas Perez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The key to victory for Hong Giles has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Hong Giles!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Lucas Perez!
The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Alexandre Firmino and Mauricio Rocha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Perez is looking to chop away at Giles's legs.
Giles really is a fat lump.

Perez rushes Giles and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Perez is trying to break the clinch but Giles is controlling him.
Giles tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Perez just stands there and leans against the cage.
Giles is stalling here.
Perez blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Giles jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Perez walks away with a smile on his face. Giles gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

and Giles counters with a lovely straight right hand!

Perez rushes Giles and presses him up against the cage.
Giles tries to pull guard but Perez won't allow it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Hong Giles. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Giles is fighting off a takedown attempt but Perez is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Giles to the mat. Giles regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Perez slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Giles seems a little lost for a moment, as Perez dominates the positioning.
Giles might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Giles is looking for a sweep.
You can see the frustration on Giles's face as Perez controls the position.

Giles knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Perez on the ground.
Perez just content to control the position.
Giles tries to buck Perez off but Perez is having none of it.
Perez tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.
Perez remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Let's hope that Perez has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Giles gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!
Perez is landing with some decent strikes but Giles is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Giles is wriggling around trying to escape.

Giles is trying to get back to his feet but Perez has full control of the position and if anything, Giles has just worked his way into a worse spot.
What can Giles do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Giles tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Perez defends well and Giles ends up having to push Perez into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Perez looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Giles shoots in and drives through. Perez sprawls well.
Perez shoots for a double leg takedown but Giles sprawls well. He's pushed Perez's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Perez stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Perez wants it to stay on the feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Hong Giles. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Perez decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Giles is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Perez defends well.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Perez has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Perez is in close to Giles's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Perez stays in close to Giles's body and controls the position.
Perez won't allow Giles to sweep him here.

Perez is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Perez tries to sprawl but Giles drives through with a takedown into half guard.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Giles scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.

Giles wants to lay and pray for a moment but Perez keeps working.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Perez wants to get back to his feet.

A close second round but Lucas Perez will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Giles reaches up to try and control the position but Perez seems to have an arm triangle now! Uh oh! Giles rolls and tries to escape and now Perez has his back!

Perez looking to break Giles's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Giles remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Perez will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!

Perez is working on the RNC. He looks like he's got it but Giles won't tap... Oh, he's out! The ref rips Perez off his unconscious opponent!
