Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Vladimir Penzenskiy! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
10 - 30 - 1, fighting out of St Petersburg, Leonid Spartak! The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Konstantin Menshow and Dmitry Maklakov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Penzenskiy throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Spartak tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Penzenskiy is in Spartak's guard. Spartak throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land. Spartak seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now. Penzenskiy throwing strikes from guard but Spartak blocks nicely. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Spartak can do anything to dispel that myth. Spartak is pulling down on Penzenskiy's head. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Spartak holds on and takes a little breather.
That's one minute gone in the round. Penzenskiy slips nicely into half guard. Penzenskiy is looking for a kimura but Spartak is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Penzenskiy to get the leverage. Spartak is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Penzenskiy stalling away here and it's allowed Spartak to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard. That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Spartak is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. We've been hearing good reports from Penzenskiy's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Spartak really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Penzenskiy. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. That's three minutes gone in the round. Penzenskiy working for a guillotine from mount but Spartak is in no mood to give up. Penzenskiy is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Spartak has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Spartak! Spartak stays in close to Penzenskiy's body and controls the position. Penzenskiy throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Penzenskiy has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Spartak can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Spartak wants to pass the guard but Penzenskiy is keeping the position. Penzenskiy is working an open guard so Spartak takes the opportunity to get back to his feet. Spartak throws a body kick despite being completely out of range and Penzenskiy holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch. Spartak stalling.
Spartak will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Penzenskiy up against the cage. Spartak has Penzenskiy pushed against the cage. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Spartak is not content to let Penzenskiy control the position. Spartak looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Spartak tries to roll over but Penzenskiy keeps him under control.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Spartak is pressing down on Penzenskiy's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. Penzenskiy throws a big right hand that misses. Spartak keeping full guard, as Penzenskiy tries to pass. Penzenskiy being controlled here momentarily.
The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity. Spartak instigates a clinch.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Spartak has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Penzenskiy regains guard immediately. Penzenskiy is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Spartak forces his way into half guard. Spartak with a momentary lay and pray from half guard. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Spartak is continuing to stall. Leonid Spartak has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Vladimir Penzenskiy is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Penzenskiy is looking to control Spartak's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Penzenskiy avoid being mounted?
