Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Rafael Cortez!
The judges for this bout are John Kavanagh, Franklyn Lucas and Steve Montenegro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Phoenix tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Phoenix misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Cortez lands with an overhand left.
Phoenix showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Cortez.
An attempted straight right counter from Phoenix misses the target.
Cortez throws a right and a left that Phoenix avoids nicely.
A telegraphed right hand from Phoenix misses the target.
Cortez finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.

Phoenix takes the fight into the clinch.
Phoenix lands a left hand.
Phoenix misses with a punch on the inside.
Cortez holding his opponent close, against the cage.
Phoenix scores with a hook to the body.
A shot in the inside from Cortez.
Cortez tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Cortez has a couple of punches blocked by Phoenix.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
A short right from Phoenix.

Cortez escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Cortez blocks a leg kick.
Phoenix is looking to land body kicks.

Cortez shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

Phoenix is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Cortez pulls his head out easily.

Cortez is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Phoenix looking for submissions off his back.
Phoenix is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Cortez slips a nice elbow through Phoenix's hands, connecting with Phoenix's forehead.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Phoenix is trying to get back to full guard.
Cortez lands with a punch from half guard.
Cortez is looking to take a break and control but Phoenix is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Cortez is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.


Phoenix is rocked!
Phoenix is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Cortez is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Phoenix is just riding it out for now. Cortez eventually gives up the hold.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Phoenix tries to get to full guard but Cortez has control of the leg.

Phoenix has one foot on Cortez's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Cortez darts in looking for a takedown but Phoenix gets double underhooks and turns Cortez into the cage.
Cortez chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Phoenix can pounce on him.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Phoenix moves into the clinch.
Cortez fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Phoenix goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Phoenix swings wildly with an uppercut but Cortez uses good head movement to avoid it.
Phoenix blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Phoenix misses with a knee to the head.
Phoenix lands a knee to the body.
Cortez will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Phoenix up against the cage.
Phoenix lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.

Cortez escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Phoenix throws a low kick, looking for Cortez's leg but Cortez calmly moves out of range.
Phoenix tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Cortez throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.

Cortez clinches up against the cage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Cortez lands a body punch - he's looking to wear down Phoenix.
A head punch on the inside from Phoenix fails to land.
Cortez lands a left hand.
Phoenix goes for a takedown in the clinch but Cortez prevents it.
Cortez scores with a hook to the body.
Phoenix is breathing heavily.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Cortez works on Phoenix's body with a couple of short punches.
Cortez pushes Phoenix back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.
Cortez lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.

Cortez turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Cortez in side control here. He's dropped a big elbow there and Phoenix looks hurt! Oh, he is hurt! Cortez turns on the heat and pounds him out for a TKO victory! Good killer instinct there!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:53 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Rafael Cortez!
Post fight, Rafael Cortez stared into the camera and said 'Finally I have found my home. Thank you Team Burns and everyone for giving me my home and making me into a great fighter. I lived in Spain my whole life and this life is different for me, but I'm so gratefull.'.
