PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Ben Coffey (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tuki Rop (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ben Coffey has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Ben Coffey!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Tuki Rop!
The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Leandro Rodrigues and Luis Engracia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Coffey fails with the takedown.

Rop throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Coffey tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Rop is in Coffey's guard.
Coffey working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Rop.
Rop working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Coffey wants to stand up but Rop is controlling him.
Rop has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Coffey keeping full guard, as Rop tries to pass.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Rop looking to sit in guard and control but Coffey gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Coffey missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Rop is trying to keep Coffey in close.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Coffey's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Coffey will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Coffey in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Coffey has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Rop wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Coffey is now in half guard.
Rop avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Coffey.
Coffey lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Coffey is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Rop doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Coffey.
Rop wants to get back to full guard.
Rop trying to control here.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Coffey seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Rop fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Coffey to the ground. Rop is now in Coffey's guard.

Coffey pushes Rop off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.

Rop closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Rop lands in his opponent's guard.
Rop looks winded!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Coffey wants to stand and escape but Rop is having none of it.
Coffey keeping moving, preventing Rop from controlling successfully.
Rop is stalling in the full guard.
Rop preventing the sweep.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ben Coffey dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Rop feints and as Coffey raises his hands in defense, Rop changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Coffey has Rop pulled in close to control his posture.
Rop wants to control from the top but Coffey keeps moving.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Coffey is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Well, if Coffey is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Coffey is looking for a kimura here.
Rop trying to hold on to Coffey's head to control him but Coffey postures up.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Coffey seems to be looking for submissions.
The fighters are battling for position here. Rop manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Coffey scoring with some ground and pound.

Coffey is stalling in the full guard.
Rop is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Coffey closes the distance and pushes Rop back into the cage.

Coffey breaks from the clinch.

Rop gets the takedown into side control.
Rop is breathing heavily.

Rop tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Coffey wants to get back to his feet but Rop drags him back down.
Coffey can't do much from the bottom here.

Rop stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Rop drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Ben Coffey will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!



Rop looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Coffey has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Rop is on him like a limpet, forcing Coffey back against the cage.

Coffey breaks from the clinch.
Coffey shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Rop as he jumps to the side.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Coffey.
Rop takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Coffey is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Rop closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Coffey quickly recovers to half guard.
Rop controlling the action here.

Rop wants to work for an arm triangle but Coffey is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Coffey is positioning himself well to prevent Rop advancing to mount.
Rop is just content to waste time from the top position. Coffey takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
Rop wants to control from the top but Coffey keeps moving.
Coffey really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Rop advances position into side control!
Rop prevents Coffey from escaping the position.

Rop is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Coffey is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Coffey is trying to improve his position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Rop tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Rop swings around for an armbar but Coffey sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Rop's guard.
Tuki Rop has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Ben Coffey is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Rop looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Coffey has picked Rop up and slammed him! Rop can't keep hold of the triangle and Coffey manages to pass to side control!

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Ben Coffey.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Coffey, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
