Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Marcus Sharpe! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Nairo Velasquez Quintana! The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, George Francis and Cecil Peabody.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Sharpe walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head. Nairo Velasquez Quintana seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Velasquez Quintana connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there. Sharpe keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.
Velasquez Quintana throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Sharpe on the side of the head. Velasquez Quintana tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Sharpe is able to avoid easily. Sharpe connects with a jab.
It looks like Nairo Velasquez Quintana has been cut. Nice jab there from Velasquez Quintana. Sharpe looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight. Velasquez Quintana clinches. Sharpe gets through Velasquez Quintana's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head. Sharpe blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Sharpe lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards. Velasquez Quintana lands with a good tight uppercut to the head. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Sharpe is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Velasquez Quintana is keeping busy. Sharpe misses with the head strike.
Velasquez Quintana has a couple of punches blocked by Sharpe.
Sharpe digs a right hand into Velasquez Quintana's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Velasquez Quintana's gas tank. Velasquez Quintana's coach down at WildBoar's Pig Pen (Strength and Conditioning) $40 was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Velasquez Quintana's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight. Velasquez Quintana misses with a hook from the clinch. Sharpe pulls guard successfully.
Sharpe is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Sharpe is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Velasquez Quintana!
That's one minute gone in the round. Sharpe moves to back control. Sharpe is looking to control Velasquez Quintana but Velasquez Quintana is wriggling around and keeping busy. Sharpe is working the back position looking for the choke. Oh, he's slid into an armbar! Beautiful transition and Velasquez Quintana taps out! Fantastic Jiu Jitsu from Sharpe.
