Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Walter Kurtz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gunji Koizumi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Walter Kurtz has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
10 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Walter Kurtz! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
10 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Gunji Koizumi! The judges for this bout are James Glass, Colin Fotheringham and James Atkins.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Koizumi closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Kurtz's guard. Koizumi works a leg free and moves into half guard. Koizumi works his way into full mount! Koizumi trying to control but he's not successful this time. Kurtz regains half guard. Koizumi wants to control but Kurtz is keeping him busy. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Kurtz wants to get back to full guard. Koizumi seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Kurtz does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Koizumi is thwarting Kurtz's attempts to control the position. Koizumi performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kurtz wants to improve his position but Koizumi is controlling well.
Koizumi controlling the action here. Kurtz is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Koizumi throwing shots but Kurtz is blocking nicely. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Koizumi is trying to work for a kimura but Kurtz is defending well.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Koizumi thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Koizumi tries to pass to full mount but Kurtz defends it. Koizumi is controlling the pace.
Kurtz keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Kurtz is looking to improve his position.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work. Koizumi wants to take a breather but Kurtz is having none of it.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Koizumi looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Kurtz is fending him off so far but Koizumi persists. Nope, Kurtz circles away and we're back to standing. Kurtz attempts a counter takedown but Koizumi avoids it well and moves away. Koizumi takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh. Kurtz misses with a straight right. Kurtz throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Koizumi misses with a low kick.
It looked like Kurtz was trying to counter with a body shot coming off that last attack from Koizumi. Walter Kurtz is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Donk. Kurtz catches Koizumi right on the button with a cross. Kurtz keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Koizumi misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Koizumi feints and as Kurtz raises his hands in defense, Koizumi changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Kurtz pulls Koizumi in to control the position. Koizumi looking to pass the guard. Kurtz working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Koizumi.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Koizumi throws a big right hand that misses. Kurtz can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Koizumi controls the pace. Kurtz looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it. Koizumi passes Kurtz's left leg - he's now in half guard. Koizumi looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Still in half guard, Koizumi seems content to control. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Gunji Koizumi dominated that round. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Koizumi is looking to land body kicks. Kurtz avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Koizumi wants to clinch. Koizumi shoots in and bounces Kurtz off the cage to secure the takedown into guard. Koizumi trying to control the position from guard on top but Kurtz is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Koizumi sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Kurtz's guard. Koizumi has been the more effective fighter overall so far. Kurtz is looking for a sweep. Koizumi is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Kurtz is looking for a sweep. Koizumi is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Koizumi not landing any meaningful shots this time. Koizumi works his way into side control. Koizumi works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head. Koizumi tries to land with some ground and pound but misses. Kurtz is trying to control Koizumi's posture but Koizumi avoids it. In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Koizumi working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though. Kurtz is holding Koizumi down, trying to stall.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Koizumi working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
You can see the frustration on Kurtz's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Koizumi misses with an attempted head punch from side control. Koizumi creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Kurtz sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike. Koizumi moves into full mount! Koizumi can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Kurtz is looking to escape.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Kurtz holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Koizumi tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
Kurtz tries to hold on but Koizumi pushes him away. Koizumi unloads with some shots from mount but Kurtz bucks and avoids them well.
Poor strikes thrown by Koizumi there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!

Koizumi controlling the position easily from mount. Kurtz is in a tricky position but he's been working on his transitions down at GWad's Playpen, so we'll see if he gets out of it. Koizumi wants to control the pace but Kurtz is squirming around nicely. Koizumi prevents Kurtz from getting the reversal. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Koizumi wants to take Kurtz's back here but Kurtz is holding on to an arm, himself looking to escape.
Koizumi goes for an armbar but Kurtz turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Kurtz. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Gunji Koizumi showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.
Kurtz gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Koizumi to score an easy takedown into full guard. Koizumi stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kurtz swivels though and keeps the full guard. Kurtz looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Kurtz pulls Koizumi in close to prevent any damage. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Koizumi wants to pass the guard but Kurtz is keeping the position. Gunji Koizumi has got the better of the ground game so far. Koizumi is still trying to improve position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kurtz pulls Koizumi in close to his closed guard and prevents Koizumi from doing any damage or advancing position. Koizumi is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Koizumi cracks Kurtz with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business. Koizumi avoids the head kick by Kurtz.
Kurtz looks to land a combination but Koizumi avoids it well. Kurtz swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target. Koizumi lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Kurtz keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.

Kurtz wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Koizumi gets slowly back to his feet. Kurtz appears to be looking for a counter takedown. Koizumi lands with a thumping leg kick.

Koizumi dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Kurtz. That did some damage! Kurtz slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
It looks like Gunji Koizumi has been cut. Koizumi fails with the takedown. Koizumi turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Kurtz connects with a leg kick. Koizumi looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it. Kurtz fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Koizumi looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath. Kurtz moves into range and lands a nice body kick.
Kurtz misses with a leg kick. Kurtz plants his feet and lands a nice head kick! Nice sprawl there from Kurtz as Koizumi shoots in. Kurtz half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range. Walter Kurtz has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Gunji Koizumi. Koizumi gets a takedown into half guard. Kurtz is not content to let Koizumi control the position. Koizumi is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Kurtz doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Koizumi. Koizumi looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Kurtz keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Kurtz is not content to let Koizumi control the position. Kurtz keeping control of the position. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Koizumi looks to land a strike but Kurtz avoids it nicely and regains full guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close third round but Gunji Koizumi just about did enough to take it. The cut man is working on Gunji Koizumi's cut. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!
Koizumi throws a low kick, looking for Kurtz's leg but Kurtz calmly moves out of range. Koizumi looking for a takedown here - he's got it. Koizumi seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Koizumi is looking to work some ground and pound but Kurtz has wrist control. Koizumi wants to pass the guard but Kurtz is keeping the position. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Koizumi has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Kurtz will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Kurtz content to stall in guard here. Kurtz trying to control but Koizumi is working from the bottom. Koizumi bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Kurtz's guard. Koizumi wants to pass the guard but Kurtz is keeping the position. Koizumi working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Kurtz wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now. Koizumi works a leg free and moves into half guard. Koizumi thows a huge punch but Kurtz dodges it nicely.
Kurtz is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment. Koizumi is looking to take a break and control but Kurtz is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Koizumi seems to be working for a kimura but Kurtz defends the submission attempt.

That's four minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Koizumi working for a submission here. He's tucked his head under his opponent's arm, looking for an arm triangle. He's hopped off into side control, looking to tighten the submission... is it going to work? He's given up a good position looking for it. Kurtz looks OK. Oh, I spoke too soon, he's out! That must have been tighter than I thought! Excellent work there by Koizumi! Submission of the night perhaps?
