Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Mohammed Franks! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Bas Schippers! The judges for this bout are Paul Aken, Saam Ante and Wagner Zegers.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! We've got one fighter who appears to only be looking to counter and the other not looking particularly aggressive either, so we could be in for a dull fight. Franks scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. Schippers tries to get to full guard but Franks has control of the leg. Franks takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Franks seems to be working for a kimura but Schippers defends the submission attempt. Franks is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Franks is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Franks is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Franks will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Schippers tries to roll over but Franks keeps him under control.
That's one minute gone in the round. Franks throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Schippers misses with some strikes from the bottom.
Franks is looking to take a break and control but Schippers is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity. Franks misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Schippers with the counter takedown but Franks avoids it easily. Franks changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Schippers tries to avoid it but Franks manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Schippers to the ground. Schippers escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. Schippers is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Franks tries for a takedown but Schippers sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mohammed Franks. That's going to take a lot out of him. Franks doesn't succeed with the takedown and Schippers counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Franks is rocked! Schippers lands a big elbow from half guard. That looks like it's hurt Franks quite badly. Franks pulls Schippers in close trying to recover. Schippers postures up and lands two really hard shots that put Franks on queer street! The ref takes a look and decides to call an end to the fight! Possibly an early stoppage but Franks doesn't seem to be complaining too much.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:50 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Bas Schippers!
