Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
17 - 9 - 0, fighting out of London, Kalle Kettu! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
16 - 8 - 0, fighting out of London, Roger Machado! The judges for this bout are William Gold, James Glass and Richard Clark.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Machado misses with a takedown attempt enabling Kettu to counter with a crisp jab.
It looks like Roger Machado has been cut. Kalle Kettu seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Machado misses with a takedown and Kettu counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. Kettu cracks Machado with a big right hand that sends him to the floor! Machado looks wobbly but he's sprung back up to his feet straight away… can Kettu finish him?
We've been told by Kettu's head coaches at RCJ Machado Jiu-Jitsu that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight. Nice sprawl there from Kettu as Machado shoots in. Kalle Kettu has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Roger Machado. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Kettu clinches up against the cage. Kettu breaks the clinch.
Kettu gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here. Kettu breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Machado drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Machado is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Kettu is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Kettu is looking for a sweep. You can see the frustration on Kettu's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kettu is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Machado is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. Machado moves into full mount! Machado wants to control the pace but Kettu is squirming around nicely. Machado looking to secure an arm triangle but Kettu defends it well. Kettu tries to hold on but Machado postures up. Machado quickly switches position and commits to an armbar! It's a big risk for Machado but it's paid off an Kettu is forced to tap! Nice work by Machado.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:57 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Roger Machado! Roger Machado decided to hype himself up post fight. It was going well but he went on about it a bit too long and the crowd turned on him a little.
