Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Micky Ward!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Eddy Rico!
The judges for this bout are Paul Tew, Donald Grub and James Atkins.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rico moves out of range of the body kick from Ward.
Rico swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Ward.
Rico bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Ward's head.
Rico has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight.
Some wild striking there from Ward.
Ward thows a body kick. Rico tries to catch it but that hurt him.
Rico misses with a wild body shot.
Rico throws a body shot but no joy.
A chopping leg kick lands by Ward.
Rico misses with a wild combination.
As Rico tries to get set, Ward tries to push him back and clinch up but Rico manages to avoid the attempt.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Thud! ouch! good body kick from Ward - that will leave a mark!
Rico looks winded!
Rico takes a head kick and keeps coming.
It looks like Eddy Rico has been cut.
Ward slips a jab and a cross from Rico.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Rico fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Ward scores with a nice body kick.
Ward has been working on his boxing with his coaches at Liverpools Red Tri-Angle MMA & Fitness in the buildup to the fight.
Ward throws a feint and then finishes with a kick to the body.
Jab, jab by Ward - just one landing.
That's one minute gone in the round.
Ward lands a big head kick that sends Rico tumbling to the mat! Ward takes a step backwards and waves Rico back to his feet - he wants the finish!
Rico is rocked!
Rico stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Ward.
Rico is still on wobbly legs! Can Ward finish him?
Both fighters circling slowly here as the pace drops. Hopefully one of them does someth.. OOOHHHH!!!! Ward throws an absolute beast of a head kick! Rico is done! He's out cold, twisted and contorted up against the ropes! Wow!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:13 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Head Kick). Micky Ward!
Micky Ward is the new middleweight champion!
A very excited looking Micky Ward made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction.
Eddy Rico was interviewed post fight and said 'Not enough fuel tonight...'.
