PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Tom Cage (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Oscar Powell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Oscar Powell told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Tom Cage!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Oscar Powell!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cage closes the distance and clinches up with Powell, looking for a takedown. Cage pushes Powell against the cage but Powell circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Cage shoots in looking for a takedown. Powell tries to sprawl out of it but Cage keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Powell manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Powell moves into the clinch successfully.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Cage tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Tom Cage. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Powell stops a takedown attempt from Cage.
Powell scores with a shoulder strike.
Powell content to slow the pace in the clinch.

Powell misses with a hook to the ribs.
Cage goes for a takedown attempt but Powell pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Powell rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Cage moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Cage went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.
No luck for Cage with that takedown attempt.

Powell closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Cage quickly recovers to half guard.
Cage is staying active underneath Powell, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Cage wants to control but Powell is keeping busy.
Powell is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.

Cage is refusing to be controlled, as Powell sits in half guard.
Cage tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
Powell is controlling the pace.

Powell lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Powell wants to pass to mount but Cage is defending the position.
Powell is keen to just control but Cage is a slippery customer.

Powell lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Cage is looking for a sweep. Powell is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Powell winds up and cracks Cage with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Cage lands a couple of sideways elbows.
Cage has hold of Powell's hands but Powell slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
We've been informed that Powell has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Cage on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Cage tries to get out of the position.
Powell is looking to stall here but Cage recovers full guard.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Powell cracks Cage with a solid left hand.
Cage tries to land a sweep but no joy.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Nice takedown defense from Powell. No joy for Cage on that attempt.
Powell throws out a counter right but Cage avoids it with no problem.

Cage gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Powell to score an easy takedown into full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Powell stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Cage swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Cage is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Powell is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Powell slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Cage shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Powell as he avoids it easily.

Cage has Powell pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Powell manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

A head punch blocked on the inside by Cage.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Powell.
Cage has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Powell after a bit of a struggle.

Cage wants to stand but Powell is controlling the position.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Oscar Powell showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

Powell manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Cage manages to get himself to full guard.

Cage has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Cage will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

Powell lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

Cage escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Powell gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Powell looking to sit in guard and control but Cage gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Cage avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Powell is on top in guard.

Powell throws an elbow that misses. Cage uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Powell's guard. Nice move by Cage!

Powell looking to hit a scissor sweep but Cage is one step ahead there.
Cage is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.

Cage drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Powell manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Cage has Powell in his guard.

Cage is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

I would just about give that final round to Oscar Powell.
Well Powell has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Oscar Powell gave a mention to Versus in his post fight interview. That will please them (and hopefully generate some sales).
In defeat, Tom Cage stepped up to the mic, saying 'fair game, we lose and win dat is the part of game, love to my fans and coaches!!!####'.
