PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Nate Gonzalez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kevin Kilpatrick (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gonzalez comes to the cage accompanied by Gangsta Gangsta by N.W.A. Kevin Kilpatrick told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Nate Gonzalez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Kevin Kilpatrick!
The judges for this bout are , Don Winkell and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kilpatrick throws a right hand that misses
and Gonzalez cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

Kilpatrick closes the distance and clinches.
Gonzalez is trying to pull guard but Kilpatrick has him pressed against the cage.
Gonzalez tries to pull guard but Kilpatrick won't allow it.
Gonzalez fails to pull the fight into his guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Nate Gonzalez. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Gonzalez tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.

Kilpatrick goes for a high kick. It partially lands.
Kilpatrick displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Gonzalez.
Kilpatrick misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Kilpatrick clinches up against the cage.
Kilpatrick tries to land knees in the clinch but Gonzalez avoids the damage to the body.
Kilpatrick digs a right hand underneath Gonzalez's ribcage. Gonzalez let out a lung full of air as it connected.
Kilpatrick lands a body shot in the clinch.
Gonzalez blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
Kilpatrick unloads a knee to the mid-section.
Kilpatrick lands a knee to the head.

Kilpatrick shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Gonzalez napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Gonzalez tries to bench press Kilpatrick off him but Kilpatrick keeps the position.

Kilpatrick working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Kilpatrick stands up and beckons Gonzalez to his feet.

Gonzalez shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Kilpatrick is trying to defend but Gonzalez finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Kilpatrick has one foot on Gonzalez's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
Kilpatrick lands with a slapping head kick.
Kilpatrick tries to clinch but Gonzalez moves out of range.
Gonzalez tries to counter with a takedown but Kilpatrick is quick to defend against it.

and Gonzalez counters with a single leg into guard. Kilpatrick didn't expect that.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kilpatrick wants to stand and escape but Gonzalez is having none of it.
Kilpatrick has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

Kilpatrick told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet.
Kilpatrick is continuing to stall.
Kilpatrick is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Kilpatrick has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Gonzalez won't allow Kilpatrick to sweep him here.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Gonzalez shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Kilpatrick but Kilpatrick pushes him off and we're back to square one.
And Kilpatrick responds with a good body kick, but Gonzalez manages to step out the way in time.
Nate Gonzalez seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Gonzalez circles away from the clinch attempt.
Kilpatrick tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Gonzalez paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Kilpatrick goes for a high kick. It partially lands.

Gonzalez is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Kilpatrick to keep the fight standing.

Gonzalez tries to roll over but Kilpatrick keeps him under control.

Kevin Kilpatrick dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Kilpatrick is looking to land body kicks.
Kilpatrick lands a slapping body shot.
Kilpatrick has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Gonzalez tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Kilpatrick swivels and escapes.
Kilpatrick throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Gonzalez is looking light on his feet compared to last time was saw him fight.
Kilpatrick dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Gonzalez. That did some damage!
Kilpatrick throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
Kilpatrick tries to close the distance and clinch but Gonzalez swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Gonzalez shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Kilpatrick defends it nicely.
Kilpatrick flicks out a counter leg kick but Gonzalez steps away.

Gonzalez tries to counter with a takedown but Kilpatrick is quick to defend against it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gonzalez looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Kilpatrick lands an elbow that stopped Gonzalez in his tracks for a moment.

Gonzalez swings wildly with an uppercut but Kilpatrick uses good head movement to avoid it.
Kilpatrick's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Kilpatrick has clasped his hands together around Gonzalez's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
Kilpatrick wants to lay and pray for a moment but Gonzalez keeps working.

Gonzalez misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Kilpatrick throws a fast counter high kick but Gonzalez manages to duck under it in time.

Kevin Kilpatrick is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Kilpatrick fakes the leg kick and cracks Gonzalez in the body.
Kilpatrick misses with a wild combination.
Gonzalez fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Gonzalez tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Kilpatrick swivels and escapes.
Kilpatrick shapes to counter with a head kick.
Gonzalez shoots in for a takedown but Kilpatrick shows good takedown defense.
Despite the aggression on Kilpatrick's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Kilpatrick feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Kilpatrick lands a kick to the ribs of his opponent. Nice work there - in and out in a flash.
A decent looking body kick lands there for Kilpatrick.
A jab from Kilpatrick finds it's way through Gonzalez's defenses.
Kilpatrick tries to clinch there but Gonzalez circles away.
Kilpatrick fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Gonzalez has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

You can see the frustration on Gonzalez's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Kilpatrick really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gonzalez. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Kilpatrick accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Kilpatrick sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Gonzalez's guard.
Kilpatrick wants to take a breather but Gonzalez is having none of it.

Kevin Kilpatrick is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Gonzalez ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Kilpatrick moves away.

And that's the end of the fight!
Kevin Kilpatrick comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Kilpatrick has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
