PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Charlie Cavanaugh (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul Baker (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cavanaugh is coming into this fight with a significant injury, which will no doubt have an effect on his cardio. Paul Baker told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Charlie Cavanaugh! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Paul Baker! The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Marco Blurström and Johanna Lukiainen.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Baker gets a takedown into half guard. Cavanaugh is breathing heavily. Baker moves into full mount! Cavanaugh won't be happy about that! Baker looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights. Baker stands up from mount. Strange move. Baker shoots in but Cavanaugh avoids the takedown attempt easily. Cavanaugh tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Baker manages to circle out of the way. Baker shoots for a takedown but Cavanaugh saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Baker darts in looking for a takedown but Cavanaugh gets double underhooks and turns Baker into the cage. Charlie Cavanaugh has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Paul Baker. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Cavanaugh slaps away a takedown attempt from Baker, before circling back to the center of the mat. Baker closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Baker lands in his opponent's guard. Baker seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cavanaugh looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Baker postures up.
Baker stands up from guard. Let's bang! Baker feints and then cracks Cavanaugh's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Cavanaugh down. Baker drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Cavanaugh tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Baker controlling from the full mount. Baker looking to secure an arm triangle but Cavanaugh defends it well. Baker looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead. Cavanaugh definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight. Baker is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Baker closes the distance and clinches up with Cavanaugh, looking for a takedown. Baker pushes Cavanaugh against the cage but Cavanaugh circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Baker fails to land the takedown. Baker shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Cavanaugh manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage. Baker is standing up over Cavanaugh. Cavanaugh looks to escape but Baker dives into side control.
Baker advances to mount. Cavanaugh is desperately trying to improve his position but Baker has a good base and remains in mount.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Baker trying to control but he's not successful this time. Baker gets to his feet and calls his opponent to stand. Here come the fireworks! Baker shoots in looking for a takedown. Cavanaugh tries to sprawl out of it but Baker keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Cavanaugh manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Baker misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. No luck with that takedown attempt from Baker. Baker shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Cavanaugh as he jumps to the side. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Paul Baker dominated that round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Baker. Cavanaugh changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit. Cavanaugh shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Baker pinned against the cage. Baker gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Baker drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Baker wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Cavanaugh, who protects the arm well. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Cavanaugh gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there! Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Baker can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Cavanaugh is looking to escape. Baker lands a big shot there that rocks Cavanaugh but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Baker stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet. Baker shoots in but no luck this time. Baker dives in for a single leg takedown but Cavanaugh sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage. Charlie Cavanaugh has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Paul Baker. Baker closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. Cavanaugh wings away with a couple of strikes but they don't land.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Baker is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Cavanaugh knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Baker slows the pace down. Baker wants to lay and pray for a moment but Cavanaugh keeps working. Baker tries for a kimura but Cavanaugh is defending well.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Baker moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now. Baker trying to control the action but Cavanaugh is working from the bottom. Baker is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Baker has an Americana. Cavanaugh didn't react quickly enough there and he's in big trouble now! He tries to squirm out but is forced to tap! Baker is delighted and gyrates in front of the ring girls. They seem to like the attention - it'll be interesting to see if Baker hooks up with any of them at the after show party.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:42 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Paul Baker!
