PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Eifion Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Pekka Rinne (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Eifion Jones!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Pekka Rinne!
The judges for this bout are George Francis, Stewart Dunkirk and Tiny Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jones misses with a head kick.
Rinne looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!
Jones stuns Rinne with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
Jones closes this distance looking for a takedown but Rinne circles away.
The fight stays on the outside here - Jones looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Jones closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Jones trying to pass the guard but Rinne defending well.
Jones will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Rinne is staying active underneath Jones, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Jones not doing much here.
Jones seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.

Jones seems to be working for a kimura but Rinne defends the submission attempt.
Jones is looking to advance position but Rinne won't allow it.
Jones wants to take a breather but Rinne is having none of it.
Jones stops Rinne from getting back to his feet.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

and Jones counters with a single leg into guard. Rinne didn't expect that.

Jones trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Rinne is trying to keep Jones in close.
Jones sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Jones postures up in Rinne's guard and throws a big left but Rinne blocks it.
Rinne wants to stand but Jones is controlling the position.
Rinne keeping moving, preventing Jones from controlling successfully.

Jones postures up and lands a big shot to Rinne's brow.
Jones trying to control but Rinne is working from the bottom.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Some wild striking there from Jones.

Rinne has managed to clinch.

Rinne works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Jones has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Rinne off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Jones keeps the fight on the outside.
Rinne swings for the body but Jones moves out of range.
Jones misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Jones tries to clinch but fails miserably
letting Rinne counter with a right hand.
Rinne throws a left and a right that both miss

and Jones counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Rinne tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Jones has advanced to mount. Uh oh.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Eifion Jones dominated that round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Jones fails with the takedown

and Rinne decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Jones's guard.

Jones had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Rinne is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Jones Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Rinne's back instead.
Jones lands an elbow to the side of the head.
Jones controls the position.
Rinne is breathing heavily.
Jones tries to keep control of the position but Rinne is staying busy.
Eifion Jones overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Jones has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Rinne's body.

Jones struggling to keep hold of the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rinne avoids the strikes from Jones.
Jones is riding his opponent, not letting Rinne buck him off.
Rinne covering up well and avoiding damage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Jones is working hard for the rear naked choke here.
Rinne is very frustrated here, being controlled quite effectively by Jones.
Rinne avoids the strikes from Jones.
Jones is working the ground and pound here and the referee is taking a close look at Rinne. He must escape soon or this one will be stopped.

Jones lands a shot to the body.
Jones slows the pace down here. Having a little breather whilst he's in a dominant position, looking to rest and regain some energy, ready to go for the finish.

Rinne is defending well here and trying to improve his position.
Rinne looking very determined here, making life difficult for Jones.
Jones wants to control the position but Rinne frees himself and scrambles - Jones manages to regain control in side control.
Rinne is trying to control Jones's posture but Jones avoids it.
Rinne manages to work his way to half guard, despite Jones's best efforts.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Rinne is holding on to half guard well.
Jones trying to advance position but Rinne counters by regaining guard.
Jones wants to control from the top but Rinne keeps moving.

Rinne has his feet on Jones's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
Jones closes the distance and clinches up with Rinne, looking for a takedown. Jones pushes Rinne against the cage but Rinne circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Pekka Rinne showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Jones is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Jones shoots in and drives through. Rinne sprawls well.
Jones shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Rinne as he avoids it easily.
Jones fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Eifion Jones. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Jones doesn't manage to clinch there - Rinne circles away.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Jones.
Jones shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Rinne but Rinne pushes him off and we're back to square one.

and Rinne decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Jones's guard.
Jones wants to sweep here but Rinne controlling him for the moment.

Rinne stands and steps away. Jones gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Rinne feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Jones wants to improve his position but instead Rinne has moved into half guard.
Rinne passes into side control, despite Jones's attempt to control the position.
Jones tries to improve position but can't.
Jones gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.

Rinne tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
Jones has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Rinne is working away from the top position though.
Jones is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Rinne's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Rinne's back!
The crowd hopeful of a finish here - Jones's supporters are on their feet, screaming for him to go for the rear naked choke.

Rinne is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.
Jones scores with a nice shot to the head of his opponent. Rinne is looking for a way out.
Jones really has the hooks in deep now - there seems like no escape for Rinne.
Jones punishes Rinne with strikes from the back mount.

Rinne prevents Jones from getting a body triangle.
Jones wants to control but Rinne manages to buck him off and is now in Jones's guard! Nice work there by Rinne!
Jones is pulling down on Rinne's head to control his posture.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Jones wants to sweep here but Rinne controlling him for the moment.
Jones controls Rinne momentarily but Rinne frees himself.

And that's the end of the fight!
Pekka Rinne comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Rinne has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
