Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
31 - 16 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Walter Kovacs! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
21 - 16 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Rekis! The judges for this bout are Ren Mimura, Shigeki Fujiwara and Kenichi Hosakawa.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Rekis keeps the fight on the outside. Kovacs clinches with his opponent.
Kovacs tries to land a knee to the head but Rekis blocks with his arms.
Rekis has Kovacs pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Rekis pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Kovacs tumbling to the mat - Rekis dives into Kovacs's guard. Rekis postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Rekis stops Kovacs from standing up. Kovacs really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Rekis wants to pass the guard but Kovacs is keeping the position. Rekis advances position into side control! We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Kovacs pushes Rekis away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Rekis gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control. Rekis is trying to get an arm triangle but Kovacs is defending well. Rekis is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Kovacs is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rekis sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Kovacs is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Rekis has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Rekis is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Kovacs's shoulder. That is not cool. Kovacs's coaches at have been working on his defensive grappling in preparation for this fight so let's see if he can get out of this tricky position. Rekis taking a break here but Kovacs is having none of it and regains half guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Kovacs is in trouble now - Rekis has advanced to mount! Rekis lands with some strikes. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Rekis is in the full mount, landing strikes.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Rekis raining down hammerfists from mount. Rekis scoring with strikes but Kovacs is staying in there.
Kovacs is rocked! Rekis postures up and throws a big right hand. BOOM! Right on the button! Kovacs is out cold - huge knockout for Rekis!
