PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Johnny Ray (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alen Zalac (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Alen Zalac will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Johnny Ray!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Alen Zalac!
The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Roger Salmon and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Zalac takes the fight into the clinch.
Ray goes for a takedown in the clinch but Zalac prevents it.

Zalac has picked Ray up - he's going for a ride! Zalac dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
Ray is trying to control but can't.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Zalac lands a nice short elbow.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Ray on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Ray tries to get out of the position.
Ray tries to roll over but Zalac keeps him under control.

Zalac told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet.

Zalac drops back looking for a leg! Ray is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Ray manages to kick Zalac off! Zalac jumps back into Ray's guard.

Zalac avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Ray preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Zalac shoots in but no luck this time.
Zalac moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
Zalac throws a body kick, spinning off balance

and Ray counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Zalac!
Zalac sneaks back into half guard.
Zalac wants to stand back up but Ray manages to pass into side control.
Zalac tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Ray works to advance to full mount. Zalac defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.
Zalac keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Ray looking to control and managing it successfully.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Zalac takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alen Zalac dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Zalac has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Ray looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Zalac has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Ray wants to sweep but no luck.

Zalac stands up over Ray, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Ray escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Zalac gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Ray is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Ray wants to get back to his feet but Zalac is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Zalac drops back, looking for a kneebar! Ray looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Ray looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Ray!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Zalac tries to buck Ray off but Ray is having none of it.
You can see the frustration on Zalac's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Ray wants to control but Zalac is keeping him busy.
Ray slows the pace down.

Ray tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Ray has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Zalac manages to work his way to half guard, despite Ray's best efforts.
Zalac tries to get to full guard but Ray has control of the leg.
Ray lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Ray throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Ray takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Zalac actively working from the bottom here.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Ray is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Ray has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Zalac takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Ray controlling the position easily from mount.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Johnny Ray dominated that second round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Zalac shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Ray but Ray pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Ray steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Zalac.
It looked like Ray was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Zalac throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Ray sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Ray has a takedown stuffed.

Ray scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Zalac tries to bench press Ray off him but Ray keeps the position.
Ray knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Zalac on the ground.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Check out the look on Ray's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
Zalac is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Zalac takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Zalac gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.

Ray is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Zalac sees it coming and defends easily.

Ray is looking for a kimura but Zalac is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Ray to get the leverage.
Zalac is trying to stand up here but Ray is controlling him well.
Zalac is trying to maintain the position but Ray is very close to passing his half guard.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Ray in particular looking to stall.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Zalac trying to hold on to Ray's head to control him but Ray postures up.
Zalac is looking to improve his position.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Ray shoots for a takedown but Zalac saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

and Ray counters with a takedown into side control.
Zalac stops Ray from passing to mount.

Ray wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Zalac, who protects the arm well.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Ray is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Zalac knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Zalac is working to avoid the ground and pound but Ray connects with a decent elbow.

Ray decides to stand up, so the ref orders Zalac to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Ray walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Zalac is looking to clinch but Ray is avoiding it.
Ray looked to counter with a high kick but didn't commit.
Zalac shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Ray defends it nicely.
Johnny Ray is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Ray clinches.

Ray pulls Zalac into guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

And that's the end of the fight!
Johnny Ray showed his dominance in that final round.
