PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Travis Cooper (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Clayton Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Clayton Smith was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Travis Cooper!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Clayton Smith!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Matti Vanhoillinen and Anni Minnemäki.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith wants to clinch.
As Smith looks to move away, Cooper throws a big counter combo but Smith just gets out of the way.

Cooper rushes Smith and presses him up against the cage.
Smith looking to throw knees to the head but Cooper is blocking nicely.

Cooper successfully pulls guard.

Cooper has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Smith can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Cooper might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Cooper looking to hit a scissor sweep but Smith is one step ahead there.

The fighters are working up against the cage. Cooper manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Cooper avoids a wild elbow strike from Smith.
A short uppercut from Cooper.
Cooper lands a nice elbow from the clinch.
Smith is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Cooper is keeping busy.
Smith is trying to force a seperation but Cooper has the dominant position.
Smith tries to stall but Cooper uses the opportunity to gain a better position.

Cooper jumps into guard, dragging Smith to the mat.

Cooper is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Cooper avoids a wild elbow strike from Smith.

Cooper manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Cooper tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Cooper wriggles free and stands up.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Smith tries to clinch but Cooper moves out of range.

Smith lands a left and a right that send Cooper crashing to the mat, dazed. Smith thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!


It looks like Travis Cooper has been cut.

Cooper closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Smith did well to prevent Cooper getting side control.
Smith tries to kick Cooper off but Cooper keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Cooper is nestled in close to Smith, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Smith wants to stand back up but Cooper manages to pass into side control.
Cooper working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.

Cooper stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Smith wants to clinch up but Cooper keeps it at a distance.

Cooper darts in and clinches Smith up against the cage.
Cooper creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Smith's defenses.
Smith wants to break free but Cooper has control.
Smith is trying to stall.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Cooper manages to pull guard.

Cooper looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Smith wants to get up but he can't break Cooper's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Smith gets to his feet - Cooper follows without any prompting.
Smith tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Cooper paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Cooper circles away from the clinch attempt.
Cooper throws a right and a left that both miss.
OH! Cooper has been rocked by a huge right hand and is in deep trouble! Smith smells blood and charges in for the finish! Smith unloads a vicious overhand right and connects to the jaw of Cooper sending him face first to the canvas! Unbelievable!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:56 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). Clayton Smith!
