Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Adrian Holden! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Connor McDonalds! The judges for this bout are Sosuke Kotani, Ren Mimura and Hirohito Nitta.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! McDonalds keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. McDonalds throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
It looked like Holden was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit. A head kick misses from McDonalds. Holden dives in for a single leg takedown but McDonalds sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage. Holden gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows McDonalds to score an easy takedown into full guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Holden wants to sweep here but McDonalds controlling him for the moment. McDonalds pushing down on Holden's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Holden is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but McDonalds pulls his head out easily. McDonalds trying to control the action but Holden is working from the bottom.
That's one minute gone in the round. Holden avoiding damage under a succession of punches from McDonalds. McDonalds lands strikes from half guard. McDonalds is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen. Holden has hold of McDonalds's hands but McDonalds slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow. McDonalds throwing shots but Holden is blocking nicely. Holden moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Holden keeping full guard, as McDonalds tries to pass. McDonalds would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Holden is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. McDonalds gets to his feet - Holden follows without any prompting. Holden looking to score a takedown here. McDonalds is defending well but Holden drives through and ends up in McDonalds's guard. Holden cracks McDonalds with a solid left hand. Holden will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Holden is fighting to break McDonalds's control of his arms but McDonalds is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment. Holden throws a strike but McDonalds rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. McDonalds slips nicely into half guard. Holden pushes McDonalds off looking to stand but McDonalds dives back in and keeps control.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Holden wants to get back to full guard. The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Holden is trying to get back to full guard. Holden really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. McDonalds wants to take a breather but Holden is having none of it. Holden makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Holden. McDonalds trying to control but Holden is working from the bottom. Holden manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. McDonalds manages to get himself to full guard.
McDonalds looks winded! McDonalds trying to keep a closed guard but Holden is proving a slippery customer.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Holden working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound. Holden lands a couple of digs. Holden connects with a couple of short punches. McDonalds is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Holden is working McDonalds over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes. Holden works over McDonalds with some ground and pound from guard. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Holden landing some decent shots from guard. Holden postures up and lands some nice ground and pound. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Connor McDonalds will probably get the nod. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!
No luck with that takedown attempt from Holden. No joy there for Holden, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
McDonalds with the counter takedown but Holden avoids it easily. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Holden is defended easily by McDonalds. Holden gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows McDonalds to score an easy takedown into full guard. Holden has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Holden keeping moving, preventing McDonalds from controlling successfully.
That's one minute gone in the round. McDonalds might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Holden haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time. Holden has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but McDonalds has passed into side control.
Holden takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better. You can see the frustration on Holden's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. McDonalds stands up and beckons Holden to his feet. Holden gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Holden is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. McDonalds scoring with punches to the head and body. Holden is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. McDonalds trying to control the position from guard on top but Holden is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. McDonalds must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. McDonalds is breathing heavily. Holden can't keep his opponent in guard - McDonalds advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Holden is trying to control but can't.
Holden gets back to full guard.
McDonalds sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Holden's guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Holden wants to control but McDonalds is keeping busy.
Holden is doing well to control the position and prevent McDonalds from advancing to side control. Holden looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Holden tries to get to full guard but McDonalds has control of the leg. McDonalds stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Holden to get to his feet. McDonalds scores with a takedown into Holden's guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. McDonalds trying to control but Holden is working from the bottom. McDonalds is posturing up here but Holden has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! McDonalds tries to roll out but it's too tight and McDonalds has to tap! Slick submission there by Holden!
