PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Russell Paulman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Santiago Diablo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Paulman might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to War is my Love . I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Santiago Diablo was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Russell Paulman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Santiago Diablo!
The judges for this bout are Dmitry Maklakov, Igor Prikhodko and Illya Tyunina.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Diablo dives in for a single leg takedown but Paulman sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Diablo stuffs the takedown attempt from Paulman. Paulman gets slowly back to his feet.

Paulman closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Diablo quickly recovers to half guard.
Well, if Paulman is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Diablo is not content to let Paulman control the position.
Paulman prevents Diablo from improving his position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

We've been hearing good reports from Paulman's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Diablo looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Paulman is trying to maintain the position but Diablo is very close to passing his half guard.
Diablo perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Diablo takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Santiago Diablo showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

It looks like Russell Paulman has been cut.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Paulman changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Diablo tries to avoid it but Paulman manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Diablo to the ground. Diablo escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Diablo performing his best blanket impression for a moment.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Paulman throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Diablo's waist but Diablo gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Paulman off to one side.
Santiago Diablo seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Diablo changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.

A punch lands to the side of Paulman 's head but he takes it in his stride.

Paulman shoots in but Diablo avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Santiago Diablo comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Diablo has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
