PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Tommy Rees (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nylun Sung (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rees kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is White Room. Sung has chosen Kamikaze as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Tommy Rees!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Nylun Sung!
The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, Damien Edna and John Mangel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sung shoots in for a double leg but Rees sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Rees lands a jab to the head.
Sung moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
Rees misses with a wild combination.
Rees stuffs the takedown.

Rees moves into range and clinches up with Sung.
Sung tries to pull guard but Rees won't allow it.
Tommy Rees has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Nylun Sung.
Sung tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Rees has Sung pushed against the cage.
Rees scores with a knee to the head.


It looks like Nylun Sung has been cut.
Rees lands an uppercut.
Rees throws an elbow but it misses.

Rees pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Rees looks to land a combination but Sung avoids it well.
Nice sprawl there from Rees as Sung shoots in.
Sung shoots in but Rees avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Sung gets cracked there but stands up to it.

Rees misses with a two punch combination.
Sung takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.

Rees pushes Sung up against the cage in a clinch.
Rees misses with a knee strike.
Rees is pressed up against the cage. Sung has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Rees down to the mat. Rees avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Sung shoots in and drives through. Rees sprawls well.
Sung looks gassed!
Sung needs to keep his hands up - Rees had a free shot at his head there.
Rees lands a two punch combo.

Rees fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Sung sprawls well initially but Rees persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Sung is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Rees pulls his head out easily.

Rees throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Sung avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Rees.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rees seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Sung does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Rees lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.

Sung looking for submissions off his back.
Rees knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Sung on the ground.

Sung is not content to let Rees control the position.

Rees is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Rees tries to pass to full mount but Sung defends it.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Rees wants to work for an arm triangle but Sung is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Sung is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Rees is nestled in close to Sung, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Rees moves nicely into side control.
Rees throwing shots but missing, from side control.
Rees wants to control but Sung is keeping him busy.
Rees scores with a couple of short elbows.

Rees tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Rees has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Rees postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Rees's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Rees throws a head kick that misses.
Sung avoids a punch combination nicely.
Sung gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Rees counters with a left and a right that stings Sung.
Sung doesn't manage to clinch there - Rees circles away.

Rees scores a takedown into full mount!
Sung regains half guard.
Sung is trying to control but can't.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Rees trying to control the action but Sung is working from the bottom.

Rees decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Sung has his takedown stuffed
and Rees counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Sung attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.

Rees darts in and clinches Sung up against the cage.
Rees is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Rees breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Sung manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Rees is looking to control Sung's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Rees avoid being mounted?

Sung is looking to take a break and control but Rees is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Rees scores with a one two! Sung had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.

Rees moves into the clinch successfully.
Sung tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Rees just stands there and leans against the cage.

Rees breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Rees lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Rees misses with a series of wild punches.
Sung swats away the attempt to clinch by Rees.
Rees will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Rees misses with a series of wild punches.
Sung with a lazy takedown attempt
and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.
Rees looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Tommy Rees seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sung gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Rees counters with a head kick. That will keep Sung thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!

Rees shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Rees turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.

Sung closes the distance and clinches.

Sung has hold of one of Rees's legs. Rees is fighting the takedown attempt but Sung gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.

Sung is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Rees is on top in guard.
Rees has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Rees has gone for a leg lock! Sung slips out almost immediately though and dives into Rees's guard.

Sung thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Sung wants to control from the top but Rees keeps moving.
Rees trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
Rees wants to stand and escape but Sung is having none of it.
Sung slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Rees fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Sung sprawls well initially but Rees persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Rees throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Rees working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Sung avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Rees.

Sung is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Rees.
Rees just misses with a punch to the body.
Rees is looking to clinch but Sung is avoiding it.

Rees tries to bum rush Sung with a series of wild strikes but Sung uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

and Rees counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Sung!

Rees pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Sung is trying to escape the mount.
Rees lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.

Well Rees has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
