Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, John Franco! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Eric Brown! The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Thiago Cunha and Luis Engracia.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Brown cracks a nice hook into Franco's ribs. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Brown. Brown shoots and misses and Franco counters with a nice double leg into guard. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Brown trying to control the position.
Franco controlling from the top position. Hammerfist, elbow! yells Franco's corner. There ya go! There ya go! We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Brown is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Franco content to stall in guard here. Franco stands up and waves to Brown to follow him. Franco has been working on his boxing with his coaches at Silva Jiu Jitsu in the buildup to the fight.
That's one minute gone in the round. Brown throws a sloppy head kick and Franco moves out of range easily. Brown scores with a one two! Franco had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes. No luck with that takedown attempt from Brown. John Franco has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Eric Brown. Franco will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Brown is looking for the big counter here. Brown moves out of range as Franco throws a body kick.
Franco lands a big head kick that sends Brown tumbling to the mat! Franco takes a step backwards and waves Brown back to his feet - he wants the finish!
It looks like Eric Brown has been cut. This has been an exciting period of action! Franco throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Brown was covering up waiting for the punch and Franco finishes the takedown easily into guard. Franco gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Franco shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Brown's guard. Brown wants to get back to his feet but Franco passes into half guard.
Franco is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Franco is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Franco sitting and controlling from the half guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Franco working the head and body with strikes. Franco in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Brown tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Franco!
