PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Rekis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mathias Vini (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rekis's entrance music is AC/DC - Thunderstruck. A fine choice. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 22 - 16 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Rekis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Mathias Vini!
The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Sosuke Kotani and Shigeki Sano.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Rekis rushes Vini and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
I was talking to Rekis's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.

Vini manages to break the clinch.
Vini throws a head kick that misses
and Rekis counters with a stiff right hand.
A slapping leg kick lands for Vini.
Vini misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

and Rekis counters with a single leg into guard. Vini didn't expect that.
Vini wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Rekis manages to pass to side control.

We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Rekis thows a huge punch but Vini dodges it nicely.
Rekis lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Vini is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Rekis jumps into side control!
Vini takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.

Vini is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Rekis is controlling him well.

Rekis landing with strikes to the head and body from side control.
Rekis advances to full mount.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Rekis lands a couple of good shots and Vini has given up his back, trying to escape the position!

Vini manages to reverse the position and now he's in Rekis's guard. Nice work there by Vini.

Vini looking to sit in guard and control but Rekis gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Rekis drops back, looking for a kneebar! Vini looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Vini looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Vini!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Vini looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

Rekis is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Vini tries for a kimura but Rekis is defending well.

Vini thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Vini wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Rekis, who protects the arm well.

Vini tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Vini has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Vini tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Vini is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Rekis knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Rekis is looking for a sweep.

Vini is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Rekis is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Rekis tries to get back to half guard but can't.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Rekis dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Vini stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Vini wants it to stay on the feet.
Despite the aggression on Vini's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.
Rekis keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Vini.

Mathias Vini seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

John Rekis is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

It looked like Rekis was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Vini will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Vini's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Vini misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Rekis is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Vini defends well.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Mathias Vini showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Vini has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Vini has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Rekis shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Vini defends it nicely.
A countering left hand to the body from Vini misses.

Rekis moves into the clinch.

Vini breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Vini throws a right hand that Rekis ducks under and follows up with a left that Rekis also avoids with ease.
Vini looks for the body kick but Rekis saw that one coming.
Vini throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Rekis counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

Rekis is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Vini is just riding it out for now. Rekis eventually gives up the hold.

Rekis is working for a submission of some sort.

And that's the end of the fight!
Mathias Vini comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Vini has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
