PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Lucky Day (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Chris Griffin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 15 - 0, fighting out of New York, Lucky Day!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Chris Griffin!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Lombardi, Joseph Jones and Columbo Gatti.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Griffin has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
Day shoots in for a takedown but Griffin shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Day lands with a right hand.
Day lands a nice shot to the body.
Day looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Day checks a leg kick nicely.
Horrible takedown attempt by Day or perhaps it was just good defense by Griffin, which made it look bad.
Day misses with a combination

and Griffin counters with a takedown into side control.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Griffin remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

You can see the frustration on Day's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Griffin's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Day tries to bench press Griffin off him but Griffin keeps the position.
Griffin is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Day will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Griffin tries to advance to mount but Day denies him.
Day trying to control but Griffin flips him over like a cheap hooker and has his back!
Griffin has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Day's body.

Day is covering up but some of the strikes from Griffin are getting through and doing damage.

Griffin working for a choke but Day is defending well.

Griffin is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Day knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Day for a finish.
You can see the frustration on Day's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.

It looks like Griffin might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Day rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.
Well, if Griffin is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Day wants to get back to full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Chris Griffin dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Griffin doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Day connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Day listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut.
A combination from Day does no damage.
Day steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Griffin.

Day gets tackled into the cage by Griffin. Griffin maintains the clinch.
Day gets underhooks to prevent Griffin's takedown attempt.

Griffin has hold of one of Day's legs. Day is fighting the takedown attempt but Griffin gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

More stalling from Griffin.

Day working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Griffin doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Griffin manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Day throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Griffin escapes and throws Day's legs to the side, diving into side control!
Day manages to get back to half guard.
Griffin content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Griffin working his ground and pound in the gym. So far it seems to be working well.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Griffin is looking to advance position but Day won't allow it.

Day looking for subs from the bottom but Griffin mounts him!

Griffin tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Day can't escape the position.
Griffin takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Day is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Griffin controlling from mount.
The adventures of Griffin the control monster continue. Boring.

Griffin jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Day manages to avoid the submission attempt.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Griffin trying to control the action but Day is working from the bottom.
Day is looking to reverse the position.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
A lull in the action here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Chris Griffin showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Day's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Day lunges at Griffin with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Griffin's hand.
Day lands with a shot to the body.
No joy there for Day, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Griffin darts in and clinches Day up against the cage.
Day scores with a shoulder strike.
Nice elbow from Griffin.
Griffin's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!

Griffin pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Griffin.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Day seems a little lost for a moment, as Griffin dominates the positioning.
Day tries to buck Griffin off but Griffin is having none of it.
Day prevents Griffin from moving into mount.
Griffin controlling the position.

Day is looking for a sweep.
Day seems a little lost for a moment, as Griffin dominates the positioning.

Griffin tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Lucky Day has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Day takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
Day tries to reverse the position but Griffin maintains control.
Day is working hard here to advance position.
Griffin controlling from mount.
Let's hope that Griffin has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Griffin tries to control but Day wriggling away.
Griffin has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Griffin goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Day is on top in guard.
Day advances position into side control!

Griffin is trying to get back to half guard.
Griffin manages to work his way to half guard, despite Day's best efforts.
The fighters are battling for position here. Griffin manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Griffin wants to sweep here but Day controlling him for the moment.
Day tries to free his leg and advance position but Griffin is retaining full guard.
Griffin lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Griffin postures up and lands a big shot to Day's brow.
Griffin pushes down on Day's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Griffin works his foot free and advances to mount.

Griffin content just to control the position here.
Day is looking to get to half guard.
Griffin looking to control and managing it successfully.

And that's the end of the fight!
Chris Griffin comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Griffin winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
