Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Margarito Byers! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Danny McGregor! The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Jeff Smith and Roger Salmon.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! An inside leg kick from McGregor misses. Good standup being displayed there by Byers as he connects with a hook. McGregor tries a head kick but it misses.
McGregor drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. McGregor stopping the sweep attempt from Byers. Byers working for a triangle but McGregor defends it easily.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Byers is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Byers looking to sweep here. No luck so far. McGregor sitting in guard here, content to control. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's one minute gone in the round. McGregor won't allow Byers to sweep him here. Byers wants to stand and escape but McGregor is having none of it. Byers is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched. McGregor gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Byers.

McGregor is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. McGregor keeps trying to improve his position. McGregor is looking for a triangle but Byers pushes his legs off easily.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Byers stands up from McGregor's guard - Byers perhaps looking for a knockout. McGregor closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Byers did well to prevent McGregor getting side control. Byers avoiding damage under a succession of punches from McGregor. McGregor tries to pass to full mount but Byers defends it. Byers pushes McGregor off looking to stand but McGregor dives back in and keeps control.
Byers is looking to control McGregor's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Byers avoid being mounted? The referee calls for the fighters to work.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Byers is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. McGregor performing his best blanket impression for a moment. McGregor prevents Byers from standing back up.
McGregor wants to work for an arm triangle but Byers is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Byers has his foot on McGregor's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. McGregor works his way back into a safe position though. McGregor throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Byers works some decent striking defense from the bottom. McGregor preventing the sweep. Byers gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows McGregor to score an easy takedown into full guard. Byers manages to escape and get back to his feet.
McGregor gets the takedown into side control. You can see the frustration on Byers's face as McGregor controls the position. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Byers is trying to work for a sweep but McGregor has mounted him! Byers prevents McGregor from taking his back. Byers wants to control but McGregor is having none of it. McGregor wants to finish this one by submission but Byers is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from McGregor. Byers working to try and regain half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round. McGregor controlling the position easily from mount. Byers bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done! McGregor looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
McGregor doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
McGregor looking to hit a scissor sweep but Byers is one step ahead there. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if McGregor can do anything to dispel that myth. Byers trying to control but McGregor is working from the bottom. McGregor kicks Byers off and gets to his feet.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Byers throws a sloppy head kick and McGregor moves out of range easily. McGregor manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Byers on his heels. He'll look to pass Byers's guard now, I'm sure. Byers has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. McGregor has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! McGregor misses with a body punch.
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Byers takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life. Byers tries for a takedown but McGregor manages to get underhooks.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Byers landing knees to the body. They look like they could hurt.
