PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Ethan Brown (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Anderson Rua (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Ethan Brown!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Anderson Rua!
The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Alexandre Firmino and Daniel Cesar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rua tries to score a power double leg takedown but Brown sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Rua somewhat.
Rua shoots in looking for a takedown but Brown manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Rua's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Rua fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Brown holding his opponent close, against the cage.
Rua is trying to break the clinch but Brown has him pressed against the cage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Rua breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Rua has taken the fight to the clinch.

Rua gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
Rua wants to pass the guard but Brown is keeping the position.
Rua is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Rua passes into half guard.
Rua perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
It looks like Rua might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Brown knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Rua on the ground.
Rua looks to score some points with some ground and pound.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Rua looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Brown pushes Rua off looking to stand but Rua dives back in and keeps control.
Brown tries to kick Rua off in order to stand up. Rua Avoids the leg push though and dives into side control.

Rua is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Brown knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
The referee asks Rua politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Rua prefers to stall for the moment though.
Rua advances nicely into full mount.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Rua is in the full mount, landing strikes.
The referee warns Brown that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Rua controlling the pace for now.
Rua scoring with strikes but Brown is staying in there.

Rua has hold of Brown's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Brown manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Rua controlling the position easily from mount.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
BOOM! Rua connects with a massive shot to the dome!
Rua tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Rua takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Brown really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Anderson Rua dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Rua shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Brown but Brown pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Ethan Brown is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Rua closes the distance and clinches.

Rua jumps guard.

Rua is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Brown is aware though and is defending well.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Rua is on top in guard.

Rua looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Rua stands and steps away. Brown gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Brown ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
Rua looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Brown is fending him off so far but Rua persists. Nope, Brown circles away and we're back to standing.
Brown dips to his left and cracks Rua with an uppercut!
Rua has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Brown defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Rua.
Brown tries to counter by clinching up but Rua breaks away and moves out of range.
Ethan Brown has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Anderson Rua.
Brown pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Rua back to the cage. Brown follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.
Rua misses with a leg kick
and Brown counters with a left and a right that stings Rua.

Rua gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Brown wants to control from the top but Rua keeps moving.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Rua holds on and takes a little breather.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Rua is on top in guard.

Rua pushing down on Brown's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Rua missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Brown is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
We've been informed that Rua has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Rua seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Rua stands up out of the half guard.
Brown bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Rua's head.

Brown changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Rua looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Rua gets back to half guard.
Rua moves into full guard.
Rua preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Brown is fighting to break Rua's control of his arms but Rua is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Rua is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Brown presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.

Brown decides to pull guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Rua works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Brown trying to control but Rua postures up.
Rua with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Rua lands strikes from half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Anderson Rua will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Brown leaves Rua with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
As Rua looks to move away, Brown throws a big counter combo but Rua just gets out of the way.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Brown enables Rua to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Brown manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Rua loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Rua's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Rua is continuing to stall.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Brown utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Rua postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Rua showing good wrestling skills to control the position.

Brown isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Rua stacks Brown on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Rua!

Rua has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Brown feints and as Rua raises his hands in defense, Brown changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Rua has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Brown is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Rua is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Brown gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Rua pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Rua clinches.
Rua tries to break the clinch but Brown is controlling the position.

Brown gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Rua regains guard.

Rua uses the cage to get back to his feet.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Rua throws a head kick but Brown moves out of range.
Rua closes the distance and clinches up with Brown, looking for a takedown. Rua pushes Brown against the cage but Brown circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Ethan Brown has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Anderson Rua.

Rua rushes Brown and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Both guys are working to get underhooks.
Rua tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Rua wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Rua breaks the clinch.
Rua shoots in for a double leg but Brown sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Brown takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Nice sprawl there from Brown as Rua shoots in.
Rua takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Rua changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Brown tries to avoid it but Rua manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Brown to the ground. Brown escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Brown drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Brown with a flurry of punches that miss.

Rua looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Rua is pulling down on Brown's head to control his posture.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Brown stands up from Rua's guard - Brown perhaps looking for a knockout.

Brown gets a double leg takedown into Rua's guard.

Rua wriggles free and stands up.
Ethan Brown has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Anderson Rua is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Rua gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Brown counters with a straight right hand.

And that's the end of the fight!
Anderson Rua comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Rua winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
