PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Ruban Kozlov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Sergey Nevzlin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 6 - 0, fighting out of New York, Ruban Kozlov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Sergey Nevzlin!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Yves DeLean and Dillan Fox.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nevzlin lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Kozlov circles away quickly and effectively.
Kozlov waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Nevzlin.
The fighters circle momentarily. Kozlov darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Kozlov takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
Kozlov throws a jab but it's blocked by Nevzlin.
Kozlov slips under a jab.
Kozlov swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Nevzlin scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Nevzlin tried to score with a low kick but Kozlov checks it.
Nevzlin misses with a series of wild punches.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Nevzlin misses with a lunging right hand
and Kozlov counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Kozlov cracks Nevzlin with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Nevzlin ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Nevzlin! But no joy.

Nice body punch from Nevzlin.
Nevzlin closes the distance but Kozlov moves to the side

and Kozlov counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Nevzlin!
Nevzlin is not content to let Kozlov control the position.

Kozlov is trying to get an arm triangle but Nevzlin is defending well.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Nevzlin is controlling Kozlov's position as best he can from this difficult position.
Nevzlin tries to roll over but Kozlov keeps him under control.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Kozlov looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Nevzlin slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Nevzlin looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.

Kozlov cracks Nevzlin with a solid left hand.
Nevzlin is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Kozlov lands a couple of decent looking shots.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Nevzlin is on top in guard.

Nevzlin must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Nevzlin wants to control from the top but Kozlov keeps moving.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Nevzlin is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Nevzlin ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Kozlov moves away.
Kozlov appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ruban Kozlov dominated that round.

Nevzlin takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Nevzlin throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Sergey Nevzlin is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Nevzlin displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Kozlov throws out the jab.
Kozlov is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Nevzlin can do to turn this around?
Kozlov looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
Nevzlin throws a low kick but Kozlov moves out of range easily.
Kozlov feinted with a counter takedown.
Kozlov swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Nevzlin follows through with a counter body kick but it doesn't land.
Kozlov moves away from the strike by Nevzlin.
Kozlov looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Nevzlin lands with a nice combination. Kozlov backs away looking to recover.

Kozlov dives in and scores a takedown into Nevzlin's guard.

Kozlov lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Nevzlin is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Kozlov connects with a couple of short punches.

Kozlov controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Nevzlin is adopting a defensive guard.
Nevzlin's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Nevzlin lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Kozlov wants to sweep but no luck.

Kozlov manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Nevzlin manages to get himself to full guard.

Nevzlin seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

Kozlov wants to control from the top but Nevzlin keeps moving.
Kozlov lands a couple of elbows.
Kozlov won't allow Nevzlin to sweep him here.
Nevzlin is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Kozlov seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Kozlov sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Nevzlin's guard.
Nevzlin wants to control but Kozlov is keeping busy.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Nevzlin on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Kozlov keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Nevzlin tries to get to full guard but Kozlov has control of the leg.
Kozlov drops an elbow to the side of Nevzlin's head.
Nevzlin is holding on to half guard well.

Kozlov is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Nevzlin misses with a jab, cross combination.
Kozlov takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Nevzlin missing with a left hand there. Kozlov was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Kozlov was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.

Kozlov bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Nevzlin tries to roll over but Kozlov keeps him under control.
Nevzlin has hold of Kozlov's hands but Kozlov slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

Nevzlin kicks Kozlov off and gets back to his feet.

Nevzlin is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Kozlov digs a good hook to Nevzlin's body.

Kozlov shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Nevzlin's guard.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Nevzlin is trying to control the position but Kozlov postures up.

Kozlov shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Sergey Nevzlin seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Nevzlin tries to clinch but Kozlov moves out of range.
Nevzlin fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Kozlov throws a good cross that connects.
Ruban Kozlov is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Kozlov gets a double leg takedown into Nevzlin's guard.
Kozlov is standing up over Nevzlin. Nevzlin looks to escape but Kozlov dives into side control.

And that's the end of the fight!
Sergey Nevzlin comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Kozlov has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
