Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 4 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Ryan McCarthy! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
9 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Roy Kannemeyer! The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Timothy Bukovac and Frank Antenori.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! McCarthy lands a right hook to the body.
Kannemeyer blocks a head kick by McCarthy.
McCarthy tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. McCarthy sets himself, and Kannemeyer steps forward looking for the clinch! McCarthy avoids it this time. McCarthy throws a head kick that Kannemeyer semi-blocks.
McCarthy scores with a shot to the body.
Kannemeyer doesn't succeed with the takedown and McCarthy makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick. McCarthy scores with a push kick. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Kannemeyer. McCarthy misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Kannemeyer is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here. McCarthy throws a sloppy head kick and Kannemeyer moves out of range easily. And Kannemeyer tries to counter it with a takedown but McCarthy pushes his down on his head and steps out.
That's one minute gone in the round. McCarthy keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
McCarthy throws a quick counter head kick but Kannemeyer was just out of range. McCarthy rushes Kannemeyer and presses him up against the cage. McCarthy lands with a right to the head. Kannemeyer tries for a takedown but McCarthy manages to get underhooks.
McCarthy's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not. Kannemeyer looking for a takedown. Ryan McCarthy has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Roy Kannemeyer. Kannemeyer has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by McCarthy after a bit of a struggle. McCarthy has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Kannemeyer uses from the top position. McCarthy looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Kannemeyer working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of McCarthy's head. McCarthy working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Kannemeyer doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Kannemeyer manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Kannemeyer being controlled here momentarily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. McCarthy preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Kannemeyer has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at World Combat Sports Academy. Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one. McCarthy avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Kannemeyer throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as McCarthy works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Kannemeyer trying to control but McCarthy is working from the bottom. McCarthy working for a triangle but Kannemeyer defends it easily.
Kannemeyer wants to control from the top but McCarthy keeps moving.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Kannemeyer throws a strike but McCarthy rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. Kannemeyer tries to land a sweep but no joy. McCarthy stays in close to Kannemeyer's body and controls the position. McCarthy wants to pass the guard but Kannemeyer is keeping the position. McCarthy is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. Kannemeyer is trying to keep McCarthy in close.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. McCarthy looking to pass the guard. Kannemeyer looking for a sweep. Not yet Kannemeyer, not yet. Kannemeyer being controlled here, momentarily. McCarthy advances to half guard. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Kannemeyer trying to control but McCarthy postures up.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Kannemeyer misses with some strikes from the bottom.
Kannemeyer is looking to regain full guard. He's left an arm up in the air though and McCarthy has latched onto it... Big trouble! McCarthy pivots for an armbar - it's in tight and it Kannemeyer is tapping in no time flat! Great counter grappling there from McCarthy!
