Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Renato Townsend! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Royce Salll! The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Cecil Peabody and Gwen Towbar.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Townsend throws a lazy head kick letting Salll counter with a right hand. Salll closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Salll lands in his opponent's guard. Salll trying to control the position from guard on top but Townsend is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Townsend wants to stand up but Salll is controlling him. Salll postures up in Townsend's guard and throws a big left but Townsend blocks it. Townsend could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Salll trying to control but Townsend is working from the bottom. Salll controls from within his opponent's guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Townsend wants to get back to his feet but Salll is in a dominant position and won't allow it. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Townsend trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.
The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity. Salll throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Townsend tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Salll is in Townsend's guard. Townsend might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Townsend had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Salll defends it easily. Salll is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Townsend working a defensive guard but Salll passes into half guard.
Salll looking to pass the half guard. Not this time. Salll is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Townsend defends it well.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Salll is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Townsend is just riding it out for now. Salll eventually gives up the hold. Salll is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Townsend has managed to free his arm - good work. Salll scores with a couple of good hammerfists. Salll is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Townsend!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Townsend's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up. Townsend defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Salll. Salll content just to control the position here. Salll looking to finish with strikes here!

Salll throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Townsend holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Salll tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Salll controlling the pace for now. Salll is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Townsend has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Townsend! Salll is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Salll throwing shots but Townsend is blocking nicely. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Salll is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Townsend doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Salll. Salll wants to lay and pray for a moment but Townsend keeps working. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Royce Salll dominated that round. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Townsend tries to clinch but Salll moves out of range. Salll shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Salll in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Salll controlling from the top position. Salll postures up in Townsend's guard and throws a big left but Townsend blocks it. Salll slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Salll in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time. Townsend is letting Salll control him for a moment.
That's one minute gone in the round. Salll misses with the ground and pound. Townsend trying to remain calm as Salll controls from the top position. Salll has been the more effective fighter overall so far. Townsend is trying to escape and get back to his feet. Townsend prevents Salll from moving into mount. Salll has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Salll wants to control but Townsend is keeping him busy. Salll throwing strikes but Townsend manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control! Salll regains half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Townsend is nestled in close to Salll, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Salll moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Salll pulls Townsend in close to prevent any damage. Salll is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Townsend has his hands clasped together but Salll extends and breaks Townsend's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Salll.
