PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Doby Burkhardt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Spike Dragon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Burkhardt comes to the cage accompanied by Not Listenin' - Keak Da Sneak and Bavgate. Spike Dragon told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Doby Burkhardt!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Spike Dragon!
The judges for this bout are Tatsuya Matsuyama, Sosuke Kotani and Yukihiro Shimada.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Burkhardt lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Dragon backs up against the cage.
Dragon moves in looking to clinch but Burkhardt pushes him off.
Dragon fails with an attempt to clinch.

Burkhardt shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Burkhardt missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Burkhardt takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Burkhardt sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Dragon defending well though.
Dragon wants to control but Burkhardt is keeping busy.
Burkhardt perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Burkhardt not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Burkhardt connects with a nice short shot to Dragon's temple.
Dragon slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Doby Burkhardt just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.

Burkhardt tries to break the clinch but Dragon is controlling the position.

Burkhardt really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Burkhardt lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Burkhardt knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Dragon on the ground.

Burkhardt wants to get up but he can't break Dragon's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Dragon lands with a heel strike from the guard.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Burkhardt gets the takedown into side control.
Burkhardt wants to control but Dragon is keeping him busy.
Burkhardt will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Dragon is looking to regain half guard here but Burkhardt keeps moving and retains side control.

Burkhardt swats away the attempt to clinch by Dragon.
Burkhardt cracks Dragon with a right hand to the side of the head.
Burkhardt throws a right hand that Dragon ducks under and follows up with a left that Dragon also avoids with ease.

Burkhardt closes the distance and clinches.
Burkhardt lands with a short punch from the clinch.

Dragon drags the fight down to the ground.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Burkhardt is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Burkhardtis looking to pass into half guard but Dragon pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Dragon is in guard.
Dragon prevents Burkhardt from getting back to his feet.
Dragon wants to get up but he can't break Burkhardt's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Burkhardt is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Dragon sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Burkhardt's guard.

Dragon can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Burkhardt is looking to escape.

Burkhardt is desperately trying to improve his position but Dragon has a good base and remains in mount.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Burkhardt lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
Dragon fails to land the takedown.
Burkhardt fails to land with a series of punches.
Doby Burkhardt seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Dragon looks for a takedown but Burkhardt sprawls well.

Burkhardt feints and as Dragon raises his hands in defense, Burkhardt changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Dragon wants to stand up but Burkhardt is controlling him.

That was a close second round but I would say that Doby Burkhardt will probably get the nod.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Burkhardt lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Burkhardt wants to pass to mount but Dragon is defending the position.
Dragon moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Burkhardt wants to stand but Dragon has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Spike Dragon has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Burkhardt, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
