PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Dao Sonnen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Anton Obuhov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Sonnen comes to the cage accompanied by Sure to be sure. Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Dao Sonnen!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 5 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Anton Obuhov!
The judges for this bout are Ivan Kurochkin, Vladimir Khabensky and Konstantin Menshow.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sonnen slips under a jab.
Obuhov scores with a jab.
Sonnen has been working on his boxing with his coaches at Ueshibas Temple of Cloud Warriors in the buildup to the fight.
Sonnen lands a nice looking body kick.
Sonnen tries to score with a low kick but Obuhov moves his leg out of the way.
Sonnen uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Obuhov.
Obuhov pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
A shot to the liver by Sonnen. Beautiful body shot.
Sonnen cracks Obuhov with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.


It looks like Anton Obuhov has been cut.
Obuhov fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Obuhov wants to clinch up but Sonnen keeps it at a distance.
Sonnen on the wrong end of a nice jab.
Obuhov walks into a jab.
Sonnen catches Obuhov with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!


Obuhov is rocked!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Obuhov lands a slapping body shot.
Sonnen looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
Obuhov closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Obuhov is still on wobbly legs! Can Sonnen finish him?

Sonnen has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Sonnen there as he acknowledges the shot.
Obuhov takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Obuhov seems to have recovered his senses.
A thudding body kick lands there by Sonnen!
Sonnen lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Obuhov at a distance.
Sonnen lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Obuhov jabs at Sonnen's body.
Dao Sonnen is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Obuhov throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Sonnen tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Obuhov is in Sonnen's guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sonnen working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Obuhov.
Sonnen has his hands on Obuhov's head, controlling the position.
Sonnen controls Obuhov momentarily but Obuhov frees himself.
Sonnen is really struggling to control Obuhov but he's trying to hold on to the position.

Obuhov pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Sonnen is keeping the position for now.

Sonnen looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Obuhov trying to control but Sonnen is working from the bottom.

Sonnen is looking for a triangle but Obuhov pushes his legs off easily.

Obuhov avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Obuhov trying to control the position from guard on top but Sonnen is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Sonnen is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Obuhov is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Obuhov trying to control but Sonnen is working from the bottom.
My spies in St Petersburg MMA Gym inform me that Obuhov has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Obuhov controls from within his opponent's guard.
Obuhov throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Obuhov is pushing down on Sonnen's leg trying to pass to half guard. Sonnen is fighting to maintain full guard but Obuhov has managed to sneak the leg through.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Sonnen is not content to let Obuhov control the position.

Obuhov is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Sonnen sees it coming and defends easily.

Obuhov is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Sonnen doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Obuhov.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Obuhov prevents Sonnen from improving his position.
Sonnen wants to control but Obuhov is keeping busy and won't allow it.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Dao Sonnen will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on Anton Obuhov's cut.
That's time! Back to the action!


Sonnen takes one on the button.
Sonnen looks to throw a body kick
and Obuhov counters with a nice uppercut.
Sonnen is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Obuhov lands a jab to the head.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Sonnen, as that shot connected.
Anton Obuhov seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Obuhov connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Sonnen momentarily.

Obuhov shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Sonnen trying to control from the bottom.
Sonnen is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Obuhov is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Sonnen is defending against the submission attempts here by Obuhov.
Obuhov is looking to advance position but Sonnen won't allow it.

Obuhov is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.

Sonnen is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Obuhov is aware though and is defending well.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Obuhov throws a big right hand that misses.
Sonnen looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Obuhov controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Sonnen pulls Obuhov in close to prevent any damage.
Obuhov has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Obuhov stands and throws Sonnen's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Sonnen regains half guard there - taking advantage of Obuhov's attempt to lay and pray for a moment.

Obuhov is looking for a kimura here.

Obuhov is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Obuhov is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Sonnen doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Obuhov.
Sonnen wants to control but Obuhov is keeping busy and won't allow it.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Obuhov seems to be looking for submissions.
Obuhov is looking to take a break and control but Sonnen is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Sonnen wants to get back to full guard.

Obuhov wants to work for an arm triangle but Sonnen is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Sonnen lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
Sonnen cracks Obuhov with a right hand to the side of the head.
Obuhov throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Obuhov misses with a looping right.
Obuhov lands a right hook to the body.
Obuhov moves out of range of the body kick from Sonnen.
Sonnen swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Obuhov fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Sonnen avoids it really well and circles away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sonnen throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Sonnen closes the distance and clinches.
Obuhov wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Obuhov breaks the clinch.
Sonnen tries a head kick but it misses.
Obuhov lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
Obuhov ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Sonnen moves away.
Obuhov paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.

Obuhov drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Obuhov is pushing down on Sonnen's leg trying to pass to half guard. Sonnen is fighting to maintain full guard but Obuhov has managed to sneak the leg through.

Sonnen wants to control but Obuhov is keeping busy.

Obuhov is looking for a kimura but Sonnen is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Obuhov to get the leverage.

Obuhov maintaining the dominant position here and is working for a kimura. He's locked it up! Sonnen could be in real trouble here! He's trying to wriggle out but Obuhov has cracked it and Sonnen is screaming in pain - he's tapped out! Great finish by Obuhov!
