Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Joel Romero! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Phil Cook! The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, and Frank Antenori.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Romero swings for the body but Cook moves out of range.
Romero with a lazy takedown attempt and Cook connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. Cook lands a jab to the nose. Joel Romero seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Romero tries a head kick but it misses.
Cook uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook. Romero throws a head kick that misses. A countering left hand to the body from Cook misses. Romero throws a combination that misses enabling Cook to counter with a crisp jab. Romero takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
Romero tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Cook defends well and Romero ends up having to push Cook into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch. Cook goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Cook ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent. Cook connects with a body shot that sends Romero's belly button to the back. No joy there for Cook, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cook misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Romero shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Cook's guard. Romero is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Romero prevents Cook from getting back to his feet. Cook keeping full guard, as Romero tries to pass. Cook wants to stand but Romero is controlling the position. Cook uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Romero throws a body punch but Cook moves out of range. Romero closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Romero lands in his opponent's guard. Romero stops Cook from standing up.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Romero missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Cook is working an open guard so Romero takes the opportunity to get back to his feet. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Romero scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Romero taking a breather here. Cook is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Romero asserts his dominance and retains side control. Romero has an Americana. Cook didn't react quickly enough there and he's in big trouble now! He tries to squirm out but is forced to tap! Romero is delighted and gyrates in front of the ring girls. They seem to like the attention - it'll be interesting to see if Romero hooks up with any of them at the after show party.
