Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the heavyweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Bradley Paul! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Gennadiy Petrov! The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Gwen Towbar and Chris Downing.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Paul misses with a takedown letting Petrov counter with a right hand. Petrov keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Petrov keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Paul shoots in but no luck this time. Petrov looks like he wants to counter punch here. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Bradley Paul. That's going to take a lot out of him. Paul with a lazy takedown attempt and Petrov counters with a lovely straight right hand! We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Paul has his takedown stuffed and Paul takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. Petrov has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight. Paul closes the distance looking to clinch and Petrov counters with a lovely straight right hand!
That's one minute gone in the round. Paul shoots in but Petrov avoids the takedown attempt easily. Petrov keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. It seemed like Petrov was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it. Paul dives in and grabs Petrov's left leg, looking for a takedown. Petrov pushes down on Paul's head and hops out. Paul fails with the takedown and Petrov counters with a nice uppercut. Paul looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight. Paul with a lazy takedown attempt and Petrov counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A big left from Paul misses. Paul changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Petrov tries to avoid it but Paul manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Petrov to the ground. Petrov escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. Paul shoots and misses and Petrov connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. Petrov throws a hook but Paul avoids it easily. Paul throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Petrov was covering up waiting for the punch and Paul finishes the takedown easily into guard. Paul passes easily into side control. Nice work. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Paul is trying to get an arm triangle but Petrov is defending well. Paul thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Paul trying to control the position but Petrov is working away. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Paul is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Petrov is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Paul controlling the position from side mount. Paul prevents Petrov from escaping the position. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Petrov can do anything to dispel that myth.
That's four minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Petrov trying to remain calm as Paul controls from the top position. Paul tries for a kimura but Petrov is defending well. Paul tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Paul tries to advance to mount but Petrov denies him. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Bradley Paul will probably get the nod. That's time! Back to the action!
Petrov stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Petrov wants it to stay on the feet. Petrov is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Paul with a body shot. Paul shoots in for a double leg but Petrov sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Petrov displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Paul. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Bradley Paul. That's going to take a lot out of him. Paul fails with a takedown attempt. Petrov let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land. Paul darts in looking for a takedown but Petrov gets double underhooks and turns Paul into the cage. And an attempted straight right on the counter from Petrov! But no joy. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Paul shoots in and gets a takedown into Petrov's guard. Paul thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Paul slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Petrov keeping full guard, as Paul tries to pass. Paul drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Paul jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Paul trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Petrov really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Paul. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Paul is working hard here to advance position. Paul content to stall in guard here. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
That's three minutes gone in the round. No luck with that takedown attempt from Paul. Petrov looks like he wants to counter punch here. Paul instigates a clinch. Petrov prevents the takedown attempt.
Paul works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard. Bradley Paul overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Paul stands and throws Petrov's legs to the side, diving into side control. Paul tries for a kimura but Petrov is defending well.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Paul trying to control the action but Petrov is working from the bottom. Paul sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Petrov is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Paul has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Petrov is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Paul yanks on the arm and Petrov is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Paul.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:57 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Bradley Paul! Bradley Paul retains his heavyweight title!
