Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Georgios Samaras! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Donovan Riggs! The judges for this bout are Bruno Lombardi, Columbo Gatti and John Roberts.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Riggs manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Samaras on his heels. He'll look to pass Samaras's guard now, I'm sure. Riggs passes easily into side control. Nice work. Riggs cracks Samaras with a big right hand but Samaras just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Riggs trying to control the action but Samaras is working from the bottom. Riggs scoring with punches from side control. Riggs grinds an elbow into Samaras's temple. Riggs working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Riggs scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Samaras to see if he's OK. Riggs scores with a couple of short elbows. Riggs connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Samaras some visible discomfort.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Riggs lands a decent elbow from side control. Samaras tries to buck Riggs off but Riggs is having none of it. Riggs cracks Samaras with an elbow. That is naaassty.
That's one minute gone in the round. Samaras is looking for a sweep. Riggs is working to tighten his grip on Samaras's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. Samaras has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Riggs is really squeezing tight and eventually Samaras passes out! Riggs breaks the hold and jumps onto the ropes to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:27 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Donovan Riggs! Donovan Riggs decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
