PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Grin Ribber (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jolly Leg Byrd (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ribber comes to the cage accompanied by Ay Ay Ay. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 20 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Grin Ribber!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 17 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jolly Leg Byrd!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ribber throws a leg kick
and Byrd counters with a nice body kick.
Ribber thuds a left hand into Byrd's body.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Byrd has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Byrd lands a nice hook to Ribber's body. Ribber takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Byrd swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Byrd throws the kick towards the body but Ribber avoids it.
Ribber misses with a head kick.
Ribber uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Byrd.
Ribber wants to clinch up but Byrd keeps it at a distance.
Byrd has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Byrd there as he acknowledges the shot.
Ribber cracks Byrd with an open hand slap.
Byrd throws an overhand right that lands on Ribber's shoulder, as Ribber tries to avoid the shot.
Ribber checks a leg kick nicely.
Nice sprawl there from Byrd as Ribber shoots in.
Ribber misses with a straight left.
Byrd changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Ribber will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Ribber jabbing away but nothing is landing.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Byrd is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.

Ribber swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
A telegraphed right hand from Ribber misses the target.
Byrd throws a shot from downtown. Ribber moves away and avoids it.

Ribber shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Ribber accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Byrd is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Ribber defends well.
Ribber controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Ribber stands up over Byrd, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Ribber seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Byrd working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Ribber doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Ribber manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
We've been hearing that Ribber has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.

Ribber makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Ribber postures up and lands a big shot to Byrd's brow.
Ribber is working Byrd over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Byrd tries to bench press Ribber off him but Ribber keeps the position.

Byrd manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Ribber wants to control but Byrd is keeping busy.
Byrd seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Ribber does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Grin Ribber dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Byrd lands a really nice looking cross but Ribber seems unphased.

Ribber throws a series of punches but Byrd avoids them all with ease.

Byrd fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Ribber sprawls well initially but Byrd persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
The fighters are battling for position here. Ribber manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Byrd got a little sloppy there for a moment and Ribber has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Byrd has managed to get both his arms back between Ribber's legs - danger averted.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Ribber throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Byrd escapes and throws Ribber's legs to the side, diving into side control!
Ribber is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Jolly Leg Byrd has got the better of the ground game so far.

Byrd is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Ribber is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Ribber tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Byrd wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Ribber is working hard here to advance position.
Ribber is trying to control Byrd's posture but Byrd avoids it.
Ribber is looking for a sweep.

Byrd has hold of Ribber's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Ribber seems comfortable defending it but Byrd has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Ribber is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Ribber is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but Byrd couldn't care less - he's delighted!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:49 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Jolly Leg Byrd!
