Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
9 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jonnhy Four! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Bill Newton! The judges for this bout are Bruno Hogan, Francis DeMontford and Chris Dean.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Newton walks into a left hand. Newton with a lazy takedown attempt and Newton takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. Four keeps the fight on the outside. Newton gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there. Four misses with a straight left. Newton shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Four counters with a crisp one two that drops Newton! Four thinks about following him to the mat for a moment but instead steps back and waves Newton to his feet! Newton is in big trouble!
Newton is rocked! Four thows a left - swing and a miss! Sloppy strikes from Four. Those never looked like landing. And Newton tries to counter it with a takedown but Four pushes his down on his head and steps out. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Newton closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Newton lands in his opponent's guard. Newton has gone for a leg lock! Four slips out almost immediately though and dives into Newton's guard.
Newton had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Four defends it easily. Four is in a tricky position. We've heard reports from his gym mates at LOD-Guts & Glory Gym that he's been drilling escapes, so let's see if he can get back to his feet. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's one minute gone in the round. Newton lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard. Newton pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Four is keeping the position for now. Newton drops back looking for a leg! Four is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Four manages to kick Newton off! Newton jumps back into Four's guard. Newton wants to control from the top but Four keeps moving.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Four seems keen to control Newton's posture. Four's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground. Newton pushes down on Four's leg and manages to get into half guard. Newton is looking for a kimura but Four is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Newton to get the leverage. Newton wants to take a breather but Four is having none of it. Newton has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Four defend it? Newton steps over the head and cranks it - Four is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Newton!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:47 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Bill Newton! Bill Newton is the new middleweight champion!
