PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Josh Barnett (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Krzysztof Kothciushco (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 28 - 19 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Josh Barnett!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 23 - 28 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Krzysztof Kothciushco!
The judges for this bout are Donatello Bradman, Winston Howard and Damien Edna.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kothciushco throws a looping overhand right but Barnett ducks down to avoid it.
Barnett half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
We've been hearing reports that Barnett has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Kothciushco misses with a double jab

and Barnett counters with a nice double leg into side control. Kothciushco won't be happy with that.
Barnett fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Barnett throwing shots but missing, from side control.
Kothciushco regains half guard, as Barnett was trying to land strikes.
Kothciushco wants to improve his position but Barnett is controlling well.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Barnett is looking for a kimura but Kothciushco is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Barnett to get the leverage.

Barnett postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

Barnett works a leg free and moves into half guard.

Kothciushco is defending against the submission attempts here by Barnett.

Barnett is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Kothciushco is just riding it out for now. Barnett eventually gives up the hold.

Barnett is looking for a kimura but Kothciushco is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Barnett to get the leverage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Kothciushco wants to control but Barnett is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Kothciushco holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.
Kothciushco wants to get back to full guard.
Barnett passes to side control.

Barnett tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Barnett throwing strikes but Kothciushco manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
You can see the frustration on Barnett's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Kothciushco scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Barnett to see if he's OK.

Kothciushco stands up and we're back to a striking position.

Barnett gets tackled into the cage by Kothciushco. Kothciushco maintains the clinch.
Kothciushco is pressed up against the cage. Barnett has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Kothciushco down to the mat. Kothciushco avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Kothciushco lands an overhand right.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Kothciushco fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Barnett manages to avoid it.

The fight stays on the outside here - Kothciushco looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Krzysztof Kothciushco will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Barnett keeps the fight on the outside.
Krzysztof Kothciushco is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
A low kick from Kothciushco is predictable there

so Barnett counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Kothciushco is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Barnett trying to control the position from guard on top but Kothciushco is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Kothciushco throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.

Barnett has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Josh Barnett overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Kothciushco postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Barnett to stand up.
Barnett ducks under a wild hook from Kothciushco.
Kothciushco tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Kothciushco throws the left hand but Barnett avoids the punch easily.

and Barnett counters with a nice double leg into side control. Kothciushco won't be happy with that.

Barnett working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Barnett postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Barnett scores with a couple of short elbows.
Barnett landing a few strikes.
The ground and pound from Barnett seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Barnett prevents Kothciushco from escaping the position.
Barnett tries to get to his feet but Kothciushco is in the middle of advancing position himself and ends up with Barnett in his guard.
Kothciushco looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Barnett throws a big elbow that misses.
Kothciushco is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Barnett loads up on a big left hand. Kothciushco felt that one! He's just covering up now, not defending himself intelligently - Barnett looks towards the ref and unloads with 3 more big shots and the ref has no choice but to stop the fight! Kothciushco can't hide his disappointment, as Barnett celebrates the victory.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:38 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Josh Barnett!
Our winner, Josh Barnett, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
