The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Makaaja shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in White's guard. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. White isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Makaaja stacks White on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Makaaja! The referee asks Makaaja politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Makaaja prefers to stall for the moment though. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Makaaja passes to full mount! That's big trouble for White! White working to try and regain half guard.
Makaaja takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. We've been hearing good reports from Makaaja's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. White can't escape the position.
