PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Liquid Gold (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jose Aldo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Jose Aldo was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 11 - 1, fighting out of New York, Liquid Gold!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 39 - 34 - 2, fighting out of St Petersburg, Jose Aldo!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Frank Antenori and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Aldo shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Gold as he jumps to the side.

Aldo looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Gold!
Aldo in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
We've been hearing good reports from Gold's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Aldo thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Aldo wants to control but Gold is keeping him busy.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Aldo tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Gold is refusing to be controlled, as Aldo sits in half guard.

Aldo with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.

Aldo can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Gold is looking to escape.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Gold is desperately trying to improve his position but Aldo has a good base and remains in mount.

Aldo wants to finish this one by submission but Gold is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Aldo.
Gold avoids a series of strikes thrown by Aldo.

Aldo goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Gold is on top in guard.
Gold is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Gold's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

and Gold counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Aldo tries to bum rush Gold with a series of wild strikes but Gold uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

and Gold counters with a stiff right hand.
Aldo misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Aldo tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Gold manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
A jab lands there for Gold.
Gold chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Aldo can pounce on him.
Aldo has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Aldo misses with an uppercut.
Gold is looking to counter punch.
Aldo shoots in but Gold avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Liquid Gold has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jose Aldo.
Aldo tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Gold slips a jab from Aldo.
Aldo takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?
Gold keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Aldo's jab looks to have found its range, popping Gold under the eye.

Liquid Gold is winning the standup battle so far.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

and Gold counters with a body kick that stops Aldo in his tracks momentarily.
Aldo fails to land with a series of punches.
Gold throws a big counter combination but Aldo scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.
Aldo tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Gold swivels and escapes.

Aldo is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Gold defends well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Liquid Gold dominated that second round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Gold takes a swing at Aldo's ribcage but misses.

Aldo moves into range and clinches up with Gold.
Still in the clinch, Aldo scores with a nice short uppercut.

Aldo tightens his grip and picks Gold up, before dumping him to the ground. Gold manages to land in guard.
Gold is pulling down on Aldo's head. It's preventing any offense from Aldo, at least for the moment.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Aldo accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Aldo takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.

Aldo sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.

and Gold counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Gold turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Aldo fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Aldo shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Gold counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

Gold thuds his right hand into Aldo's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Gold scores with a jab. Aldo acknowledges it with a nod of the head.

Gold tries to sprawl but Aldo drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Aldo thows a huge punch but Gold dodges it nicely.

Aldo looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Liquid Gold.
I think Gold has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
