PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Kennith Berry (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Sampson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). There are an array of beautiful celebrities at ringside tonight! I wonder if any of them paid for their tickets.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Kennith Berry!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, John Sampson!
The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Mauricio Rocha and Emerson Jorge.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sampson tries to clinch up

and Berry counters with a nice double leg into side control. Sampson won't be happy with that.
Sampson is being controlled here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Sampson tries to bench press Berry off him but Berry keeps the position.
The referee asks Berry politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Berry prefers to stall for the moment though.
Berry works to advance to full mount. Sampson defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.
Berry connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sampson wants to control but Berry is having none of it.

Berry lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.

Berry jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Sampson is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Sampson and Berry has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

Sampson is trying to control Berry's posture but Berry avoids it.
Berry has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Sampson seems a little lost for a moment, as Berry dominates the positioning.

Berry decides to stand back up.

Sampson rushes Berry and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Berry can't get the takedown.

Sampson pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Sampson throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Berry is looking to counter punch.
Sampson throws a right and a left that both miss.

Berry changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Sampson looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Sampson is looking to reverse the position.
Sampson wants to get back to his feet but Berry drags him back down.
Sampson is letting Berry control him for a moment.

Berry thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Berry is thwarting Sampson's attempts to control the position.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Berry lands a nice short elbow.

Sampson is trying to maintain the position but Berry is very close to passing his half guard.
Berry stops Sampson from getting back to his feet.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Berry connects with a nice short shot to Sampson's temple.

Berry stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Sampson tries to clinch but Berry is having none of it.

Berry has taken the fight to the clinch.
Berry wants a takedown but no success here.
Berry is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Sampson gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Berry avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sampson misses with a takedown

and Berry moves into the clinch.
Sampson tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Berry avoids it.
Berry wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Sampson has him pressed against the cage.
Sampson is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Berry cracks Sampson with a solid left hand.
Sampson wants to sweep but no luck.

Sampson is looking for a triangle but Berry pushes his legs off easily.

Berry has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Berry seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Sampson for as long as he can get away with.
Berry throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Sampson works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Sampson wants to stand and escape but Berry is having none of it.

Sampson has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Berry is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.

Sampson has had enough of the clinch but Berry keeps him there for the moment.

Sampson breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Sampson tries to close the distance and clinch but Berry swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Berry enables Sampson to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Berry manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Sampson accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Berry is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Sampson is controlling him.
Sampson passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Berry is looking for a sweep.
Sampson is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Berry's shoulder. That is not cool.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Sampson decides to stand back up. Sampson steps back and let's Berry get back to his feet.

Kennith Berry has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of John Sampson.

Sampson ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Sampson no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Sampson will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Berry is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Berry's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Berry drops back looking for a leg! Sampson is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Sampson manages to kick Berry off! Berry jumps back into Sampson's guard.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
