PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jon Melcher (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joe Hughs (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 14 - 0, fighting out of London, Jon Melcher!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 47 - 48 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Joe Hughs!
The judges for this bout are Dillan Fox, Robert Douchet and Alec Ball.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hughs displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Melcher.
Hughs let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.
Hughs throws a sloppy head kick and Melcher moves out of range easily.

Hughs instigates a clinch.
Hughs lands a nice elbow.


It looks like Jon Melcher has been cut.

Melcher pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Melcher throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Hughs was covering up waiting for the punch and Melcher finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Melcher throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Hughs works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Hughs avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Hughs is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Melcher is aware though and is defending well.

Both fighters have adopted an aggressive gameplan on the ground!

Melcher is working Hughs over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Hughs is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Melcher defends well.

Melcher keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Hughs's head.
Hughs has momentary wrist control but Melcher slips an elbow through the middle.

Melcher distracts Hughs with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Melcher definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.

Hughs has momentary wrist control but Melcher slips an elbow through the middle.

Hughs had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Melcher defends it easily.
Melcher chips away with some ground and pound.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Melcher's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Melcher cracks Hughs with a solid left hand.
Melcher connects with a couple of short punches.


Hughs is rocked!

Hughs working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Melcher doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Melcher manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Hughs is still in real trouble! Can Melcher finish him?
Melcher is in close to Hughs's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Melcher chips away with some ground and pound.
Melcher postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Melcher stands up over Hughs, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Melcher content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Melcher postures up from his opponent's guard, before exploding into some vicious ground and pound! Hughs covers up, he's hurt! Melcher keeps throwing the strikes, glancing at the referee... Will he stop it?? One more big shot from Melcher and the ref steps in to end the fight! Melcher can't hide his delight as he celebrates with his corner.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:36 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Jon Melcher!
As Jon Melcher got his breath back, he grabbed the microphone and managed to blurt out the following: You thought I didn't have a shot? Wrong, bitches! You scared, bro?'.
