PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Brett Stevens (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tommy Shannigan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Brett Stevens!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tommy Shannigan!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Tiny Johnson and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Stevens fails to land with a series of punches.
Stevens tries to close the distance and clinch up but Shannigan swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Shannigan gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Shannigan had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Stevens is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Shannigan Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Stevens's back instead.
Shannigan is hanging on to Stevens's back as he tries to escape.
Stevens is covering up but some of the strikes from Shannigan are getting through and doing damage.
Stevens just trying to survive but Shannigan is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish.
Shannigan is working the ground and pound here and the referee is taking a close look at Stevens. He must escape soon or this one will be stopped.
Shannigan is throwing shots to the body but Stevens manages to wriggle free. Shannigan pounces on him again and ends up in Stevens's guard.
Shannigan really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Stevens. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Shannigan would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Stevens wants to get back to his feet but Shannigan is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Stevens bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Shannigan's guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Stevens accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Shannigan is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Stevens trying to control but Shannigan is working from the bottom.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Shannigan wants to stand and escape but Stevens is having none of it.
Shannigan wants to sweep here but Stevens controlling him for the moment.
Shannigan is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Stevens is controlling him.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Stevens accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Shannigan misses the shot to the body.
Stevens shoots for a double leg takedown but Shannigan sprawls well. He's pushed Stevens's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Stevens tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Shannigan swivels and escapes.
Stevens is breathing heavily.
Stevens slips under a jab from Shannigan.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Stevens feints and as Shannigan raises his hands in defense, Stevens changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Stevens is looking to stand up but Shannigan won't let him.
Shannigan looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Shannigan wants to stand but Stevens is controlling the position.
Shannigan is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
Stevens wants to control from the top but Shannigan keeps moving.
Shannigan seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Stevens prevents Shannigan from getting back to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Shannigan utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Shannigan swings for the body but Stevens moves out of range.
Stevens misses with a jab, cross combination.
Shannigan fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Stevens is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

and Shannigan counters with a shoot takedown. Stevens fights it but they end up in guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Brett Stevens. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Stevens keeping moving, preventing Shannigan from controlling successfully.
Shannigan prevents Stevens from getting back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Tommy Shannigan will probably get the nod.

Shannigan stuffs the takedown.
Shannigan fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Stevens manages to avoid it.
Shannigan waving his hands out infront of him, looking to distract Stevens.
Shannigan scores with a jab to the head.
Stevens has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Stevens there as he acknowledges the shot.
Stevens throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Shannigan's waist but Shannigan gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Stevens off to one side.
Stevens misses with a two punch combination.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
A left lands for Shannigan.
Shannigan misses with a straight right.

Shannigan wants to clinch

and Stevens counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Shannigan's guard now.

Shannigan pushes Stevens off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Stevens takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
Good work by Stevens as he checks the leg kick.
Shannigan throws a head kick that misses.
Shannigan closes the distance and clinches up with Stevens, looking for a takedown. Shannigan pushes Stevens against the cage but Stevens circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Stevens keeps control of Shannigan as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Stevens tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Shannigan just stands there and leans against the cage.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Brett Stevens. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Stevens using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Shannigan has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Stevens has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Shannigan avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Shannigan is working for takedown but Stevens is calmly controlling the position for now.

Shannigan fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Stevens manages to avoid it.

Shannigan is trying to break free.
Stevens jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Shannigan walks away with a smile on his face. Stevens gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Stevens shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Shannigan as he avoids it easily.
Stevens shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Shannigan as he jumps to the side.
Shannigan keeps the fight on the outside.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
The fight stays on the outside here - Shannigan looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Stevens stuffs the takedown attempt from Shannigan. Shannigan gets slowly back to his feet.

Stevens shoots in and bounces Shannigan off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Shannigan keeping moving, preventing Stevens from controlling successfully.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Brett Stevens dominated that second round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Shannigan connects with a body shot.
Stevens throws and low kick but Shannigan moves out of range easily.
Shannigan throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Stevens is looking to land body kicks.
Shannigan throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Stevens.
Shannigan swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Shannigan misses with a straight left.

Stevens looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Shannigan!
Stevens moves to back control.

Stevens scores with strikes from the back.
Stevens somehow managing to miss with a strike from the back.
Shannigan looking very determined here, making life difficult for Stevens.
Stevens gets his hands free as Shannigan looks to control.
Stevens tries to get the hooks in deep but Shannigan pushed the leg off.
Shannigan is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.
Will Stevens go for the finish here or will he try and keep control of the position?

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Shannigan trying to get back to his feet but Stevens is in full control for now.
Stevens keeps control of the position as Shannigan tries to break free.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Stevens missing with punches from the back.
Stevens is looking to control Shannigan but Shannigan is wriggling around and keeping busy.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Shannigan is trying escape back to his feet. He turns into his opponent's guard and eventually finds his way back to his feet.

Shannigan shoots for a double leg takedown but Stevens sprawls well. He's pushed Shannigan's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Stevens misses with a body punch
and Shannigan counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Stevens thinking.

The fight stays on the outside here - Stevens looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Shannigan tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Stevens paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Shannigan catches Stevens with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
Shannigan throws a series of punches but Stevens avoids them all with ease.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Stevens shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Shannigan misses with a two punch combination.
Stevens falls off balance throwing a combination
and Shannigan counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Shannigan thows a left - swing and a miss!
Stevens uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Shannigan.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Shannigan rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Stevens moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Stevens has a takedown stuffed.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Brett Stevens.
I think Stevens has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
