PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jesse Shiflett (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Diego Mir (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mir has chosen Runnin as his entrance music. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jesse Shiflett!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Diego Mir!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Stewart Dunkirk and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mir doesn't manage to clinch there - Shiflett circles away.

Shiflett fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Mir sprawls well initially but Shiflett persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mir tries to kick Shiflett off but Shiflett keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Shiflett perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Mir looks like he's trying to stand up.
Shiflett sitting and controlling from the half guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Shiflett working to pass to mount. He's got his hand pressing down on Mir's thigh. Mir counters though and makes it back to full guard.
Shiflett stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mir swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Shiflett not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Shiflett tries to free his leg and advance position but Mir is retaining full guard.
Mir keeping moving, preventing Shiflett from controlling successfully.
Mir wants to stand but Shiflett is controlling the position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Shiflett sitting in guard here, content to control.
Mir thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Shiflett controls from within his opponent's guard.
Mir is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Shiflett is controlling him.
Mir looks gassed!
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Shiflett not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jesse Shiflett dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Mir tries to close the distance and clinch but Shiflett swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Diego Mir seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Mir tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Shiflett paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Shiflett has taken the fight to the clinch.
Mir presses Shiflett against the cage and delivers a mid-strength body shot.

Shiflett gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Mir regains guard.
Shiflett in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Shiflett looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Shiflett postures up in Mir's guard and throws a big left but Mir blocks it.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Mir is looking to stand up but Shiflett isn't so interested in that idea.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mir is breathing heavily.
Shiflett seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Mir wriggles free and stands up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
A right-left combo lands from Shiflett.
Mir takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
Mir tries to clinch up
and Shiflett counters with a thumping low kick.

Shiflett closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Shiflett lands in his opponent's guard.

Shiflett decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Shiflett throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.

Shiflett feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Shiflett decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Mir, up you get!
Mir tries to clinch up

and Shiflett counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Shiflett controlling the pace.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jesse Shiflett dominated that second round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Mir tries to clinch up

and Shiflett counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Shiflett.
Shiflett slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Shiflett stands up from Mir's guard - Shiflett perhaps looking for a knockout.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Mir misses with a takedown attempt
and Shiflett counters with a nice body kick.
Jesse Shiflett is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Shiflett clinches up with Mir and pushes him back against the cage.

Shiflett manages to pull guard.
Mir wants to stand but Shiflett is controlling his posture from full guard.

Shiflett tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Shiflett has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Mir off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.

Shiflett stands up and waves to Mir to follow him.
Mir tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Shiflett counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Mir!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Well Shiflett has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
