PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Alex Karelin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kimo Lima (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Karelin comes into the arena with Russian National Anthem blaring out of the sound system. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Alex Karelin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Kimo Lima!
The judges for this bout are Valeri Chadov, Sergei Dronov and Konstantin Menshow.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Karelin is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Lima fails with a takedown attempt.
Karelin moves out of range of the strikes.
Karelin tries to clinch up but Lima circles away and keeps his distance.
A swing and a miss from Karelin.

Karelin gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Karelin slowing the pace effectively.
Nice body punch from Karelin.
Lima has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Karelin avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Karelin effectively controlling the action here.
Karelin lands a body punch in the clinch.
A bit of stalling here from Karelin.

Karelin wants the takedown. Lima is fighting it off but Karelin persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Lima's guard against the cage.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Karelin would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Karelin stands up from Lima's guard - Karelin perhaps looking for a knockout.
Karelin doesn't manage to clinch there - Lima circles away.

Karelin scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.

Karelin rushes Lima and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Karelin just leaning against Lima, taking a breather.
Karelin lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.
The referee calls for Karelin to work.
Karelin scores with a hook to the body.
Karelin is pushing Lima up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
Lima wants a takedown but no success here.
Alex Karelin has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Kimo Lima.
Come on Karelin - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
Lima is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Karelin gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Karelin lands a right hand.
Karelin lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Lima backwards.

Karelin has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Lima clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
Karelin is controlling his opponent, waiting for an opportunity to finish.
Lima wants to escape the position.
Karelin keeps control of the position easily here as Lima tries to buck him off.
Karelin is hanging on to Lima's back as he tries to escape.

Lima manages to reverse the position and now he's in Karelin's guard. Nice work there by Lima.
Karelin wants to get back to his feet but Lima is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Lima in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Lima is looking to advance position but Karelin has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!
Lima is desperately trying to improve his position but Karelin has a good base and remains in mount.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Lima is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Lima connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.


It looks like Alex Karelin has been cut.
Karelin tries to close the distance and clinch but Lima swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Lima uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Karelin.
Left hook, right uppercut from Karelin.


It looks like Kimo Lima has been cut.
Lima looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Karelin drives through and clinches with Lima against the cage.
Karelin digs a right hand underneath Lima's ribcage. Lima let out a lung full of air as it connected.

Karelin pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Alex Karelin is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Karelin misses with a wild combination.
Lima is breathing heavily.
Karelin misses with a wild body shot.

Karelin digs a good body shot into Lima's ribs.
Lima takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Karelin misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Karelin moves in looking to clinch but Lima pushes him off.
No joy there for Karelin, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Karelin instigates a clinch.

Karelin has Lima pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Karelin pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Lima tumbling to the mat - Karelin dives into Lima's guard.

Karelin decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

This has been an exciting period of action!
Karelin cracks Lima with a good jab.
Lima shoots in but no luck this time.
Karelin tries to clinch up.
Karelin throws a body punch but Lima moves out of range.
Karelin tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Karelin looks to land a body kick but Lima moved away.
Karelin throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

Karelin gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Karelin gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Lima.

Karelin throws a head kick but Lima moves out of range.
Karelin throws a nice looking combination but Lima bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Lima misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Karelin throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Lima sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Karelin misses with a few strikes there.
Karelin dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Alex Karelin is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Karelin has Lima up against the cage in a clinch.

Karelin digs a right hand into Lima's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Lima's gas tank.
Karelin lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.
Karelin lands a hook that snaps the head of Lima backwards.

Karelin breaks from the clinch.
Karelin moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
Karelin tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Karelin throws a right hand that Lima ducks under and follows up with a left that Lima also avoids with ease.
Karelin throws a looping overhand right but Lima ducks down to avoid it.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Lima tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Karelin counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alex Karelin dominated that second round.
Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Karelin fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Lima manages to avoid it.
Lima tries for a takedown but Karelin circles away easily
enabling Karelin to counter with a crisp jab.
Karelin pivots, looking for a leg kick but Lima is out of range and Karelin settles back down.
Karelin takes a swing at Lima's ribcage but misses.
Lima takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
A telegraphed right hand from Lima misses the target.
Karelin throws a series of punches but Lima moves out of range.
Karelin will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Karelin takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.

Lima moves out of range as Karelin strikes.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Karelin is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Lima doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Karelin counters with a nice body shot.
Lima avoids the body shot from Karelin.
Karelin misses with a series of wild punches.
Karelin lands a jab.
Alex Karelin is winning the standup battle so far.
Karelin tries to close the distance and clinch up but Lima swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Alex Karelin is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Lima just misses with a punch to the body.
Karelin throws a body punch but Lima moves out of range.
Lima wants to clinch up but Karelin keeps it at a distance.
Karelin is looking to wear down Lima with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.

Karelin throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena.
Karelin wants to clinch.
Karelin jabs at Lima's body.

Lima will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Karelin fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Lima, pushing him back against the cage.
Karelin lands a hook to the side of the head.
Karelin will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Lima up against the cage.
Lima changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Karelin fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Karelin wants to clinch up but Lima keeps it at a distance.

Karelin breaks the clinch.
Karelin tries a head kick but it misses.
Karelin dodges the punch combination from Lima.
Kimo Lima has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Karelin scores with a nice strike.

Well Karelin has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
